vertex3 - performance degrading?

Hi all,
about a year ago i built a new machine with win7 64bit. i installed a vertex3 128gb for my C: when i ran the WEI i got a score of 7.9 but only 3.1 for graphics ( i forgot to install the nvidia driver )

anyway after installing that and re-ran the SSD dropped to 7.8 was baffled but was only .1 so wasnt bothered.

anyway last week had to reinstall windows again this time before running the WEI i ensured all drivers etc installed. ran the WEI and the vertex3 only gave me a score of 7.3

so it looks like over time the vertex3 is degrading in performance? anything i can do to resolve this?

Question... did you "secure erase" your SSD before re-installing Windows?

Possibly a write amplification issue (effects all flash storage devices). Especially if it's had a hard 12 months use (run speed test apps much?) + another install of Windows. A Secure Erase will re-set your SSD back to "factory fresh out of the box state".

You could try running ATTO benchmark (just once) to see what that looks like. This should give you am idea of what state the drive is in (NB. this is the benchmark that OCZ use to give the figures quoted in the advertising blurb).

If you have not done before, then a read of the OCZ SSD ABC guide is worth it:
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/content.php?306-SSD-ABC-Guide

PS. WEI isn't the best of performance tests!
PPS. If you don't want to re-install windows again. Then do a full disk backup of your SSD (Acronis True Image, or even Windows 7 own backup should do). Secure Erase SSD, then recover back your drive image. I'd put money on your SSD being back to full speed then.

I've had OCZ SSDs that haven't registered more than 5.9

I really wouldn't worry about the WEI, try running atto to test the real performance.

i just been looking at fw versions and was wondering what FW i was running..
ive downloaded and installed AS SSD benchmark.

it says: OCZ VERTEX3 ATA 2.06 - i think this is latest fw however it also said the following...

pciide - bad
103424 K - ok
111.79 GB

what is pciide ?

when i reinstalled windows i just selected the drive i wanted to install windows in (vertex) and clicked format drive before continuing with the install.

was that wrong?

It means the ssd is running in IDE mode instead of the faster ahci mode, set SATA ports to ahci in BIOS

just tried atto on default settings

it tested between 0.5 - 8192.0kb (default) here some results

on 1024.0kb write=458304 read=397682
on 4096.0kb write=456079 read=394758
on 8192.0kb write=452782 read=389036

You need to set SATA port what the ssd is plugged into to ahci from IDE,that's why you have poor speeds

i just rebooted into bios and changed from IDE to AHCI then when i load windows it loads to the black screen wiith the windows logo then i see (for a split second) it go blue screen error and reboots again and goes into the same cycle until i went into bios and set it back to IDE. :/

Hold on ill post a reg tweak,it will blue screen otherwise, saves you reinstalling windows

boot back up into ide, click this file and run it reboot into bios set to ahci, save exit boot into windows, youll see windows install the ahci drivers needed n thats it

this is what you should be seeing speedwise

that file worked a treat. what did it do? i assume edited the registry but what in the registry?
my speeds are now a lot better

was
1024.0kb write=458304 read=397682
4096.0kb write=456079 read=394758
8192.0kb write=452782 read=389036
now
1024.0kb write=508882 read=555383
4096.0kb write=512525 read=559240
8192.0kb write=516222 read=559240

Well you can only set ahci before you install windows,if you don't you have to reinstall windows, the reg tweak just allows win7 to install ahci drivers without reinstalling that's all,it doesn't damage anything

Your ssd is working correctly now

scored 7.8 now on WEI

i am looking at upgrading/getting the 256gb vertex4. however the 256gb vertex 3 and 256gb vertex 4 are priced the same.

im assuming the vertex4 is much better than the vertex3
