Very good RTS Games

While I like normal RTS games with 2 armies I'm looking for a empire like on with resources tiers etc (something like civilization in a RTS setup)
 
Supreme commander: forged alliance.


Company of heroes is also very good but has a simpler resource style.
 
Quite old but Age of Empires 3 (and it's two predecessors) are very resource based RTS games.
All the ones listed above are great in their own right too, especially Total War games and Company of Heroes (the most epic WWII based RTS ever), some would argue that Men of War (think it's called that) is better though but I haven't played it so can't comment :)

oih i forgot a bit old too but empire earth 2 is brilliant.


Think age of empires but you go from cave men all the way to robot tanks.


along the way your resources have to change ie from stone and wood to iron and coal to oil and uranium etc


Also they have this quite good territory system the map is divided up into territories and to build on the poil or urainium you must take over and defend the territory.


Quite good when you know the next epoch advancement will mean you'll need oil and the only supply you've seen is in enemy territory :D



Plus because all the areas of the map have names the battle stats at the end of a game are great if you group say 5 bombers into a control group )lets say 7) then send them on a bombing raid it will in the stats at the end say

Code: 
"1st Battle of Trafalgar" (assuming thats the name of the area) 

your side                                    Enemy units

7th bomber group                        8th armoured division (6 panzer tanks)
                                         200mm howitzer group (2 200m howitzers)



                            Victory

Deaths 0                                  8th armoured 7 losses
                                        200mm howitzer group 2 (destroyed)

casualties 0                             8th armoured 1 (panzer tank)


or something similar I can't quite remember the exact detail.


But you get that for every battle in a big list including your allied units that took place.



hmm i might go reinstall this :p

Battle for Middle Earth and Battle for Middle Earth 2
both realy good RTS and you will find them cheap
 
Dawn of War?
Don't know if that's exactly what you are looking for but it sort of has resources
 
Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne Expansion. STILL look pretty and the story line is totally and utterly engrossing. Two of the greatest RTS games of all times.

After this i would heavily recommend the Dawn of War series and definitely the Battle for Middle Earth Series.
