Rumours

What, then, of Ferrari? Fernando Alonso will see out his career driving a red car, of this we are certain. But what of the future? Ferrari lost its intended perfect partner for Alonso with the Rallying accident that befell Robert Kubica. The Pole would have been driving for Ferrari this year, but with Robert out, Felipe Massa got a reprieve. And it is not working out. Massa has now entered the record books as the Ferrari driver to have gone the longest without scoring a podium in the team’s F1 history: 35 races and counting. His drive in Singapore was outstanding, but one wonders if it is too little too late.

Ferrari, however, has no real need to replace him because it has only one season to wait before a new driver arrives. That driver will be Sebastian Vettel, and he will race for Scuderia Ferrari come 2014. It’s one of those widely known secrets in the paddock, just as Robert Kubica’s move was known about. Ferrari doesn’t do spur of the moment. It does pre-contracts at least 18 months in advance. And Vettel is understood to have signed one such agreement

Did they not say the same thing about Kimi & Alonso when they were rumoured to be joining Ferrari? a pre-contract seems to be the norm at Ferrari, I've read pieces on Spanish & Italian sites say the same thing.

Massa also seems likely to stay on a 1 year contract, which leads me to think this deal with Vettel is 99.9% likely.

If Red Bull knows about this, why would they sign Webber?
Knowing you have Vettel leaving in 2014, why not bring in Hamilton who seems desperate enough to leave McLaren.

The other way to look at things is that they're not confident enough of Massa to tie him down to anything more than a single year and if he has another season like this, then they'll bring someone else in (Perez, or as I read today (on here I think) that Kubica is still a possibility for a Ferrari seat if he can sufficiently regain the necessary fine motor skills).

Really it's just people putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with possibilities, and there are a few of them.

Yep. But it is quite clear that they are planning something for 2014. Webber was quite open that Ferrari were offering him short term deals, and they have been in no rush to make headway into signing anyone else on a long term deal.

What that something is, who knows, but I will be surprised if whoever is sat alongside Alonso next year isn't on a 1 year contract.

I just can't see Ferrari changing their '2nd driver support role' way of doing things and that Vettel will only be there when Alonso goes (maybe a cross over year).

I still dont get why SV would go to Ferrari.
dont get me wrong its bound to be a good car and there or there abouts, but why go up against FA in the same car - Ferrari will carry on loving FA as much as they do now and SV will always be considered the 2nd driver, how ever many titles he has by that point

I just cant see how it would work out for SV to go there

Ok - that could be a way out, but Im not sure FA will be going anywhere by 2015 (and no reason he should)

Is Alonsos current contract until the end of 2014 or the end of 2015?

A 1 year overlap may be fine, but 2 years is just asking for 2007 McLaren-esque troubles from either of them. And as both Frank and Duke say, that is assuming Alonso doesn't carry on.

Alonso won't retire, he will still be too young. He's adored at Ferrari, they know what they have. The Italians never really took to MS despite all the titles, do they really want another German, even one a bit less robotic?

Besides, Alonso will blow him away and it will end in much pouting and crying. Vettel had to get Red Bull to reel in Webber, let alone arriving at Alonsos stable and expecting him to yield.

It's a match I can't wait to happen if we cannot have Hamilton at Red Bull.

I agree, Alonso would easily have the measure of Vettel. Given a good car Vettel would do well, but given anything other than the best and its Alonso's playground.

2015 would be 15 years in F1 for Alonso though wouldn't it? You can't blame Ferrari for planning ahead. Who else is there that could be their number one in a few years time if Alonso goes? I can think of plenty of people to fill the second seat, but the list of top young drivers who could fill the number 1 seat is basically Hamilton and Vettel.

Think they would a decent match for each other. Alonso being the far more complete driver (he admits himself he's not the best in any area, but more well rounded), Vettle being the faster of the two.

I'd still put my money on Alonso over a season though.

They need a push over who is better than massa, ie massa but better.
I don't know who would fill that role. Kovi? I don't know tbh

Alonso would own vettel in same car

It would be close.
Alonso would most likely finish higher in the WDC, but it won't be a walkover.
Vettel is a great driver and Alonso is probably the only driver out there who is better, but the gap is not huge.

Consider that many people on these forums rate Hamilton/Button as top class. Well, Vettel is beating both those drivers in a car which is definitely slower than the McLaren.
