Vettel to Ferrari in 2014?

I am starting to think that Ferrari don't really know what they want.

They have let both Hamilton and Perez slip through their fingers, both young drivers with many years ahead. The only serious offers we know about was Webber, a guy at the tail end of his career. There's zero news about them bringing any of their young guys not in F1 into the team. So what do they want?
Perhaps neither Hamilton or Perez were prepared to play second fiddle to Alonso. I don't believe that Ferrari would offer anyone a equal standing in the team at the moment. They want to Alonso to win in a Ferrari, alonso wants to win in a Ferrari, I can't see either of them letting another driver get in the way of that.

True, but from what we can tell (which may not be a true reflection of what happened) they didn't even approach Hamilton or Perez. So it doesn't sound like discussions got to the stage of playing second fiddle, and then fell down. It sounds like discussions never started in the first place, suggesting Ferrari weren't interested in either.

Is there any public knowledge of them officially approaching anyone other than Webber?

Massa is taking a lot of flack in the World of F1 and also in Italy.
I remember somebody on this forum went to the Monza GP and they said all drivers got cheers except for Massa (which is crazy, given that he is a Ferrari driver).

No he blew it when he went rallying when he should have been more focused on what his actual motor racing goals were. The same way some football clubs don't allow their players to ride motorbikes etc.

Too right. If you are an F1 driver, it is your responsibility to take care of your body and to avoid risky sports.

If I'm a face model and I happen to partake in cage fighting and my face gets disfigured in a cage fight, then I only have myself to blame, when my modelling career ends.

If you take the risk and get hurt (resulting in your career ending), then you only have yourself to blame.

BBC F1 website reporting that Ferrari have narrowed thier search for Alonso's team mate down to Three drivers.

Hulkenburg
DiResta
Massa

benson is a known schumi hater and one of the most biased journalists.

whilst i dont imagine schumacher will be driving for ferrari next year i wouldnt entirely dismiss the idea
“A little mouse whispered in my ear that Schumacher could go back to Ferrari,” former Ferrari driver Patrick Tambay told RMC Sport. “It is perhaps just the dream of some tifosi, but why not?”

also remember pat frys comment after the valencia race when he was asked something along the lines of "were you ever worried alonso might not make it" and fry said they had no doubts about alonso and they were more worried about wether schumacher would get the podium

its obvious some of the team still want to see schumacher do well, he would probably make a good no2 for alonso but would he want to? theres a lot of mutual respect between them and alonso is constantly saying good things about michael , only recently alonso said schumacher would have won atleast 3 races if he were in the sauber

Or perhaps they didn't approach them because Alonso said no way is any driver taking away my chance to win in a Ferrari. Perhaps Ferrari themselves thought that Hamilton or Perez could both beat Alonso and again want Alonso to be the man, for the moment... Perhaps Ferrari simply don't like either driver and it was all a simple rumour they were interested at all. I was initially shocked when Massa got to drive for them again this year but in hindsight, I'm convinced they want Alonso to win in their car, which would explain why they didn't replace Massa with a better driver.

Edit... MSC back in a Ferrari? Yes please, that would be interesting both on and off the track.

Some top teams do actually.

They don't usually allow them to do things like ice staking during the season.

You don't know that rallying wasn't one of Kubica's motor racing goals, so you can't really say he should been more focused on his goals.

Yes I know they do, JPM alienated himself from Ron when he had his motorbike cough tennis accident :D

If rallying is one of his motorsport goals as you say , then great he can carry on doing it. Rallying is something he could have done when it was all over. Sadly you can't 'play' at an F1 career. You are either dedicated to it or not. He wasn't, can you imagine MS motorbike racing on the eve of a season at ferrari?

Not a chance, that's why he was a world champion and Kubica will never be. I do feel bad for his injuries but he's not so thick that he didn't understand the gamble he was taking with his career.

Kimi was WDC, and he spends his winters entering snowmobile races under a fake name :D

Did he do that at Mclaren? Kimi is another prime example of serious underachieving for the speed and talent he had. Kimi I suppose can be excused he has a world title, but really if he had half the motivation and desire of a MS or an Alonso he would have been a triple world champion at least.

When I see drivers lose focus like that, even Hamilton to an extent it makes me admire the never ending focus of drivers like MS, Senna and Alonso.

Kimi really is the exception.
If all drivers decided to follow his example...it would not be good for their careers.
It amazes me that Kimi can live the lifestyle he leads and still be so competitive in F1.
He really does buck the trend.

I think he's done it pretty much every winter since he was a kid. He was mucking about on snowmobiles when the Williams rumours were floating around before he joined Lotus.

I think its a bit much to expect F1 drivers to be mindless drones focused on nothing but driving. They need to have a personality too. But your right, nice guys don't win (much). But to some people there's more to life than just collecting WDCs.

You have to admit that second career Schumacher comes accross as a far more likeable bloke than the 7 WDC machine that he was in his first career.

I like Kimi I really do, it's hard not too. Yet I'm not sure about his season this year. He's being beaten by Grosjean in qfy. An area where he was previously so so strong. Now is he beating Grosjean in the races because the guy lacks experience but is able to show he's faster than kimi these days, yet lacks race day experience?

I'd have loved to see Kimi back at Mclaren or if not a much better team mate next year to see where Kimi is really at these days :)

Grosjean has been testing F1 cars, been around the F1 paddock and been winning other single seater championships while Kimi was crashing into snowbanks. So I think its only fair to give him some time to get back into things. 1 year is enough though, he needs to be on top again next year.

But then I think half the problem is people thinking so little of Grosjean, when in the last couple of years he's really progressed as a driver. He won GP2, Auto GP and GP2 Asia (again). The guy is quick, he just needs to stop crashing :). Too many people seem to just remember 2009 Grosjean and assume he's done nothing for the last few years.

only because of the way the media portrayed him

looks like a nice guy to me but the "journalists" would rather try and bring someone down the majority of the time
