VGA cables for 360

surely set the res to 1280*720 on that monitor?

1440*900 cannot display a 1280*1024 image surely?

Also NBA 2K6 looks fantastic on my 2407 (sorry to rub it in :))

It looks pretty much the same on either 1280x1024 or 1280x720.

Would you mind posting a pic of 2K6 just to compare?

On both my Dell 2007 wide, and my philips 20" wide, at 1366x768 I get virtually no jagies,

This is true of the lost planet demo, as well as oblivion and even perfect dark. Graw demo is the same.

I am using the offical MS VGA cable.

I think mainly the jaggies were most visible in PGR3 but I've heard thats known for it and the motion blurring used my TV's helps to hide that.

On my other games, the jaggies are less noticeable but still there.

Hope this isn;t too late, but I found a couple of articles which deals with some of the original questions posted in this thread, and also confirms what I said about 1280x1024 being the 'correct' resolution when using a 1680x1050 monitor.

I'm afraid I can't be of further help to you, other than to say double check the setting on the monitor that deals with aspect ratios e.g my Eizo S2110W has a 'Screen Size' setting that you can switch manually between 'Fullscreen', 'Enlarged', and 'Normal'.

Thanks Wolf, they look good, do you get any jaggies? I'm downloading the Hitman demo atm to test it out.
Asides from Halo 2 (understandably..) not that i've noticed. I've since got Tomb Raider: Legends and even my mum commented how good that looked :D

So I fired it up again and took a closer look and didn't notice any obvious jaggies. Sitting about a metre away it looked very smooth, even looking at things through the binoculars.

Oh from a meter away the jaggies are not so noticeable but being mainly a PC gamer who is used to sitting about half a meter away from the screen, thats when they become clearer.

It really isnt the correct ratio mate.

Its the wrong aspect ratio. If you have a monitor with 1:1 pixel scaling, (like the Dell, NEC, Philips or whatever) select that mode, and then chose 1280x1024. You will notice the image is just a "square" in the middle of the screen.

Thus, its not conforming to the wide aspect of the monitor, you need to chose 1360/1280x720/728 for the correct aspect ratio.

Remember everything is rendered interally at 720P on the 360, so if anything they are just simply upscaling the image to 1024.

*EDIT*

Also, on the IGN article, they say:

"In our test case, our BenQ FP202W 20'' widescreen 8ms LCD has a native resolution of 1680x1050, but looks best when the 360 is set to 1280x1024 widescreen. Other resolutions could not be scaled properly and looked pretty bad."

So it could just be the monitor has issues with scaling.

@Dark_Angel
Thank you for the clarification - I do appreciate where you are coming from and yes you are absolutely correct that upscaling will occur, as I have already said.

My point was that it could be worthwhile for sanofi to try 1280x1024, as the headroom from the increased pixel-depth compared to 1280x768 may help any scaling problems his monitor might have, especially on the 'jaggies' front.
Yes, so the aspect ratio is not quite correct but in practice I have found the difference to be almost negligible (a few stretched pixels to the left and right), and the quality of the image is preferable to me than using 1280x768 with the black borders.

@sanofi
I agree with what Dark_Angel has said, that it could be just your monitor that has problems upscaling to the desired resolution. I can't think of what else it might be as we have covered pretty much everything?

I have to admit.

I have tried all resolutions, a month or so ago (I was bored :p)

And really did find the best res for my 2 monitors (Dell 2007 and Philips 20"wide) that x768 is the best res.

One thing to think of though, is some games play better in certain resolutions I have heard. PGR3 coming to mind instantly.

Thanks for those responses, I've pretty much tried all the resolution and they all give that same jagged edges.

Apparantly connecting via VGA has some issues on some monitors hwere jaggies will be prominent or colours will appeared washed out.

Whereas on others it will look excellent. It may be just this Hanns G monitor, it would be great if someone else with this monitor and a 360 could post whats theres looks like.

For example, in that H thread on that Dell monitor via composite the colours are so vibrant but when that user tried VGA input everything turned rather dull.

If anyone else is using the VGA connector with a TFT monitor, please could you post your experiences and pics if possible to compare. Many thanks all.

Well my MS VGA cable arrived today, and I can confirm that the picture quality on this is far superior then my Joytech one. (1360x768 Widescreen)

Right away upon booting the 360 I noticed the dashboard fonts being miles more clearer/sharper. Not tried any games yet, I'm just checking out some game vids atm.

Edit: Anyone want a joytech vga cable? :p

Hi Kainz, what monitor are you using?

Hehe I sold my old third party cable on ebay, sending it back from whence it came.

Had an official MS VGA for my 360 and it was pretty useless on my 22" CRT as most of the games wouldn't display properly in a 4:3 format, they would all display stretched out. If I used 640 x 480 it was fullscreen but it kinda defeats the point in having a decent monitor.

Sold my 360 shortly after and if I buy another I'd probably just get an HDTV instead and use component, or try a decent TFT but I'd be dubious as most modern TFT's use higher native resolutions than the 360 can display, making the pic quality less than ideal imo.
