Video Editing Card Please.

When you guys are talking about editing, do you mean encode time, or general usage or trimming, cutting, navigating video?

I just sold my 380, and was using Sony PlayMemories for my paintball videos. I want to get more into editing, and was going to buy (most likely) a GTX 1060 for gaming.... but if the general usage is that much worse than a RX 480... I'll reconsider the 480.

Least with Vegas, the GPU acceleration speeds up everything, from encoding time, to timeline to adding in special effects and watching them playback in real time. Change this to CPU and the timeline will be a choppy mess when changing through it etc.

I know for sure latest nvidia GPUs don't support GPU acceleration in Vegas no more reason I have no idea.
But for video editing GPU acceleration is a very must have.

Ok, so is vegas any good? How much does it cost?

Its my favourite I haven't tried all software but for me Vegas just works. Its not cheap $600 for the pro 13 edition. Lucky I didn't pay and nor would I ever pay that price because I don't make money from the video I upload to justify the price. My video are just for own free time etc

My dad on the other hand used to make money from family video editing for people etc so he used to get discounts on these products and since he doesn't do that anymore I got the software from him.

yeahhh.. I'll be using a freebie then unless there is something reasonably priced lol. Thanks for the info :)

Okay so the 460 has landed and its about a £100 but the reviews i have seen on it the comments are not to kind, but i think that is more for its gaming side. So what do you guys think ? Still a worth while buy as a video editing card for 100 quid ?

Yes it will do a fine job and should in theory be as good if not better than your 6850 was. :)

I never knew you could do that. Do i pay the postage back ?

Yes. I have no idea when it comes to video editing but you need to be looking at GTX 750Ti, GTX 950 and RX 460 as those are all in the £90-£120 price region.

Honestly mate I would avoid the 460, and get the cheapest 470 or 480 you can.

The folks over at Blackmagic tested the 480 against the Titan X, and MSI Gaming G1 GTX 1060 ( an overclocked card ), and the 480 beat both in heavy work loads in DaVinci Resolve and decoding RED footage.
In the heavy workloads the GTX 1060 even failed sometimes due to low VRAM.

https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=49713

This was their conclusion in the end.
I also did some tests with decoding RED footage, the files that come with Patrick's Resolve 11 training, and the 1060 is about 15% slower on RED decode than the RX480 in the same system, the 1060 is also slower with Neat Video, however the heavier tests we did with Neat Video failed on the 1060 as it ran out of RAM, it has 6GB vs the RX480s 8GB and the Titan X with 12GB.

The performance varies between 15% to 45% faster than the 1060, depending on the plugins, source files etc.

In short, the RX480 is faster with every test we throw at it in Resolve than last years Titan X, and much faster than the 1060. Looking at the specs for the new Titan X, it will be a bit quicker than the 480 in resolve, but a pair of 480 cards should be a lot faster than the new Titan X, at considerably less than half the price.

In Catia and Solidworks, the RX480 is running 50%+ faster than the GTX980, but on AutoCAD the 480 is about the same as the 970, so it varies from program to program.

In short the RX 470 or 480 would be your best bet, and the 8GB VRAM option being ideal with extreme work loads.

Them card are a bit out of my price range to be honest. I know their is a 470 for £165 but i don't think i could live with that cooler on it. I might have to take a look at the GTX 750Ti, GTX 950 as Gibbo suggested.

If you have to pick between those three, I would personally opt for the 460 then. It still has dedicated hardware for video encoding and decoding, so it will be faster than the two NVIDIA cards in those regards.

Try and get the 470 over the 460, as the 470 isn't that much slower than the 480. But if you can stretch to the 480 then alls good.

I would need to be paying about £190 for the 470 and even more for the 480 so its out of my price range.

So it looks like i will have to go with the 460. How come i don't feel excited about buying the 460

:(

Mainly because, as always with very budget orientated cards, the one above it is substantially better for not too much more. Sadly budgets are a *****, and we gotta stick with them :(
