This year’s BAFTA Video Game Awards ceremony has ended, with some of the usual suspects coming out on top.

During the show there wasn’t a real frontrunner, though the games tallying up the most categories won were Portal 2 and Battlefield 3 with a total of three, amongst which Portal 2 managed snagged Best Game, Story and Design, where as Battlefield got a hold of Audio

Achievement, Online-Multiplayer, the GAME Award 2011. Other titles honoured included Little Big Planet 2 which received awards for Family Game of the Year and Game Innovation.

Surprisingly enough, Batman: Arkham City only managed to win in two out of the 9 categories it was nominated for, even though it seemed to be this year’s major contender.

Famous Minecraft creator, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, was awarded with this years BAFTA Special award. In his speech he emphasised on the fact that the game industry is shifting its focus to make room for innovation and smaller companies such as Mojang, instead of a series of big name developers.

The full list of winners is the following:
Action: Batman Arkham City
Artistic Achievement: Rayman Origins
Audio Achievement: Battlefield 3

Best Game:
Debut Game: Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Design: Portal 2

Family: Little Big Planet 2

Game Innovation: Little Big Planet 2

Mobile & Handheld: Peggle

Online – Browser: Monster Mind

Online-Multiplayer: Battlefield 3

Original Music: LA Noire

Performer: Mark Hamill (The Joker) – Batman: Arkham City

Sports/Fitness: Kinect Sports 2

Sports/Fitness is the only one I really disagree with there. I might have given original music to Portal 2 or Deus Ex HR instead of LA Noire, all 3 were great though.

I noticed a distinct lack of Japanese games in the BAFTAs. I'm glad Dark Souls actually got a few nominations.

The fact MW3 didn't win anything is what I call progress.

An interesting point you make there about Japanese games and it makes me think of recent comments about the Japanese industry going downhill and running out of creativity.

A find it quite hard to think of any new IP's developed in Japan that have really taken the gaming world by storm in recent months or years, truthfully, most of the global hits have been western in origin.

Is there a full video of the event anywhere?

Not sure how Portal 2 recieved best game tbh, but then out of the shortlist below, we have 3 sequels, a yearly iteration of football, and yet another Zelda game. I know developers are playing safe, but we need more originality.

Portal 2
Batman: Arkham City
FIFA 2012
L.A. Noire
The Elder Scrolls V – Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

These awards (like films) are just pointless imo. Would much prefer awards voted by consumer level gamers.

They'd be just as pointless tbh. If it was a public vote then it is likely that the games that sold the best woud win due to their sheer popularity regardless of whether or not they had any significant technical or artistic achievements.

The most popular titles will always win at award shows like this.

You have a fair point, but as long as it's real gamers voting and not the parents buying the trash which seem to be the charts for the popular retailers.
