Vikings Valhalla (Netflix)

Intital impressions after one episode, a competent if bland spin off a far superior original, so about what most people would have expected. It's going to be really difficult for this to be succesful without the brilliant cast and amazing characters of the original, very hard to compete with Ragnar, Floki, Lageartha and the rest of the supporting cast/characters.

Early days though.

Agreed, I couldn't shake the feeling they were trying too hard if that makes sense. I keep thinking Olaf is Stingray from Cobra Kai as well lol

Norsemen on netflix is best Viking show. :D

Quoted for the truth, I like to watch it whilst perched on the ****ing log (as long as my personal moment is not invaded from below :D)

Really enjoyed first episode of Valhalla, great to kick off with the St Brice's Day massacre and building what that leads up to, I believe that we'll be getting how Normandy has changed since the Norse occupation as well which should be good.

What with final series of Last Kingdom only a week or so away I feel very spoilt at the moment :)

Same the series has been quite good. Obviously early days yet but shows promise if they eventually lead him to his vovage.

Enjoyable, but the levels of aha it was a double cross and this was my plan all along from so many sides is getting a bit tiresome. I will watch it though as the first three of four series of the original is some of my favourite tv.

It's okay but nothing special. In fact I'm probably looking forward more to the 5th season of The Last Kingdom which also starts this week. (Apart from the fact the Hungarian sets look nothing like the supposed real UK counterparts).

And while I hate to use the w(oke) word, a mixed race Jarl in Kattegat - really? Along with the multi cultural representation in the market place.

Also seems a bit cliched with the expansion of Christianity into Scandinavia, Catholics = bad, Pagans = good!

Is this watchable if you haven’t seen the original series?

Yes it is a separate spin off series. There is loose ties and references to the original and story occurs about 100 years after Ragnar and co so not necessary to follow.

The first episode scripting was terrible but I stuck with it and it really improved. In the end I really enjoyed it however I caveat as I have not watched the previous Vikings series.

I watched the first four, the stupid "representation" issues aside it's just meh, competent but meh, and it is just making me want to rewatch the original tbh.

Im enjoying it - far more than the later seasons of the original.

Anyway , series 2 already in the can and series 3 filming soon so at least you know it wont be cancelled anytime soon.

People have been losing it online about it being 100 years later and Leif being Erik the Reds son and the continuity not holding up after he died in the original series. I don’t see them making that error, especially after saying Harold fine hair was grandfather to Harold Sigurdsson. So they know the time difference.

Yep same, finished episode 7 & 8 last night. Just OK, but couldn’t help comparing characters to the original Vikings and they just didn’t stack up.

Ep7 and it's still just a confusing mess, trying to cover so many storylines not to mention the old fast travel syndrome creeping in.

It's not the same - Last Kingdom S5 definitely wins this round.
