Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

They got an amazing deal!

Happy days - I hope they feel that way, at the end of the day it was in the £30 lot that had the gameboy in it so i've had my fun with it and made my money back anyway. If a few people get some bargains and pick up an old console that's been given a new lease of life for a bit then I can't complain. It's less about money really more about fiddling with and seeing if I can fix stuff/repair/mod stuff.

I'm still totally undecided on what to do with my proper switch. I invested a good few hours into that one and now i'm reluctant to sell it. Although I could do with the cash to go towards buying more... I have my eyes on a broken ps5 :D

Would be great to trade up in that way, a fun journey with a great prize!

I've just been given a boxed PSP, with original receipt, working condition unknown. Going to order a new battery, and give it a go. Definitely due a replacement shell if it's a runner :p

PSP!! I love my little PSP.... Get that baby working! To be honest I haven't come across a faulty one yet that doesn't work.

Little lunch time joycon repair / mod....

More things turned up, dock USB port, and some M92's which means I can fix one switch lite board (possibly) while I wait for Max chips to fix my project board... Ive got loads of pics of that and what im doing so that should make for a decent post once complete... I may even post some progress shots.

I fixed another switch lite this evening... And it was a good one! Different fault to all the others and a fault ive not seen yet!! I got a load of pics and some video so ill get prepping it all for the thread!

Your switch empire continues to grow! How many is that now?

Probably done 20 or more switches I think. Of those I have 3 boards that as yet ive been unable to repair but im now using them as test / donors, one is lined up for my custom switch i'm making for me which now is only missing max and M92 but was missing all sorts mainly all the components around max17050 which I have now harvested from various locations on the cpu damaged board. I spotted what I think was making it not work as I was cleaning and rebuilding it. One took brute force to the cpu so that's dead. And the other one boots but wont get past the switch logo. (I have the parts to fix it but have harvested it pretty heavily since then. Mind you ill probably sort it with the cpu damaged board if i get really bored :)

I'm learning more about how these work all the time and am pretty confident now that I can sort most things so long as it's not a dead cpu.

I forgot to mention there is an xbox 360 on it's way curtesy of @ljt - probably just a laser issue but they can be fun... Last one ended up in smoke.. the OG xbox laser I bought from china caused smoke followed by a nice glowing fire. Not sure I updated the thread with this turn of events yet but ive got some pics and the seller has already refunded me but tbh im not sure I can be bothered to fix it fully anymore. It's still under my bench along with the ps2, The ps2 I have loads of stuff to share but first I need a working pad. I have 3 pads and not a single one of them has a full complement of working buttons. Ive bought a new membrane to get at least one pad fully working but thats going to take a while to get here!

Hmm, new battery arrived today, and the PSP fired straight up! Aside from signs of wear, it's 8n great condition. The UMD drive is really quiet, which was a nice suprise :p

Now, I'd like a second opinion here. It's fully working, original, with original box, leaflets, and even the receipt. Is it wrong to reshell it? I'm a little torn to be honest.

Re shell it, even the best of the best ones go for 35 quid or so. You know it makes sense.

Finding one with a quiet UMD is a miracle in itself.

Franken switch parts! I need that case to get here!! Tonight I think I'll try and get the board powering up. See if I can save it or if I need to consider one of my other boards.

Really need to wash my mousemat. It gets dirty quick when I'm fixing stuff on it.

I keep thinking I should cut some traces and run a load of wires on the board and make a see through fallout esq switch.

It's already got missing pads on the charge port where some animal mashed it off. Luckily this was the only broken pad and that pin isn't used on the lite so I just slapped a new port on.

I'm not sure I'm allowed to ask this in here but would anybody be interested in seeing a mod chip install (for the look I'm going for) on a switch? I want wires and stuff running around and random stuff that looks like it shouldn't be there behind my see through shell. I'm even considering removing the metal rear shield and adding some of my own 3d printed supports.

I want to build something that isn't just a standard re-shell.

It's strictly no talk of that if a mod sees it they will edit your post.:)

That's a shame, I am a bit confused on the rules @Maccy - Can you clarify please mate, just so I don't come a cropper - Can I show an install without going into any depth at all on what it does/how to use it etc. To be honest I actually have little to no interest in actually using it. In the words of will smith "It's for the look, I don't light it".... If i'm making a ghetto switch something has to be a bit special and I can't think of much else.

I think it's time to sell the unpatched switch neon. I've had a few days with it now and it's perfect, I repaired the dock as well with a new port and that's also working perfectly. The switch is sleeping properly, holding good charge and everything is working. I linked it to my nintendo account and have tested and played some games so I think it's got to go. Was a fun little project. I know people are looking for unpatched switches in the MM but I don't think I can list it for what I paid given parts and time I've put into it. I'll probably just let it go back on auction.

 I don't want to be responsible for starting a fire in the Vince household :o :p

Well it made it here over the weekend!! Time to work out what to do with it. It's a Falcon console which I am not entirely sure what that means but the best ones are Falcon / Jasper. with Jasper being the most sort after. I have been doing some looking and there is all kinds you can do to these things. All kinds of crazy mods etc but I think for me lets just get the thing working and functioning as it should and decide from there. Thanks so much for shipping it my way! :D

No problem, Glad it got there safely! :D

Yeah it's exceptionally noisy, but at least it switches on (well I hope it still does lol!) It's been sat in the loft about 7 years and in my mancave for last 2 in a cupboard! I think new thumb sticks are needed on the controller as the coating seems to have broken down and disintegrated over the years!.

Interested to see what you end up doing to it and if the noise can be sorted as I'm sure they weren't that noisy normally!

I just happen to have another controller for this one anyway :) I had a pc version that im sure you can just hook up. Also if it doesnt work then thats also a win :D

Falcon and Jasper are the board revisions which mitigated the 3LOD issue - basically between the release model and the slim, several board/component revisions helped:

- lithography shrink on the GPU (2 times) and CPU (once)

- gluing the GPU down to stop it warping ( )

- upgraded GPU cooler with heatpipe and flying extra heatsink. The original was just a 15mm thick aluminium fin jobbie!

I had to reflow my second gen 360 twice and upgrade the cooler mount, before I actually got hold of the upgraded GPU heatsink and lapped it. There were even aftermarket fans you could buy, Talismoon Silent Whisper I had with LEDs! Ultimately I got a year or two more before it died again, and started lasting only days or hours between rebuilds. I didn't have the heart to keep tearing her apart :(

Picked up a Slim though and that's still fine! Very clever to do die shrinks on existing hardware IMO.

Interesting - there is lots of talk about replacing the 90nm chip with a 65nm one so that could be a lot of fun and something I think we could attempt if I grab a re-ball template!

Also - Franken switch lives!!!

So many weird and wonderful faults with this board but finally we have some action! Waiting on my mod chip kit, clear case etc so while im waiting I might start designing some parts to replace some of the internals to get that look im going for!
