Whats on the flip side of that? Is it just a straight SATA, or is it earlier IDE?

edit:
Found one on fleabay for £5. Do you know if the size of the drive is restricted by the case, or will it take any hdd and deal with it?

on the flip side is a proprietary connector :) inside is a standard sata 5400 spinner. HDD sizes went from 60 to 320 i believe. 320 was on the later slim models.

Thanks, that sounds like FAT32 then. I'll dig up a 500 and partition it to 320

If its anything like other xbox systems it will have a custom partition mxfs or whatever it is. For the one x/s I have a tool for formatting drives copying setup files etc to configure a new drive for xbox... You might need a similar tool for the 360. I've not done huge amounts on the 360 in terms of hard drive so not sure.

Im going to have to open it to check ide/sata now... Ive not opened one in so long I cant remember.

Gentlemen... let the mega cd live!! Passes all the hardware test suite, reads games fast and is so quiet in operation.. it's lovely and all that was wrong was a fuse (which for now I've bridged until parts come in).

Given its age its getting a full recap regardless. But lads this one is a beaut.

Its also in beautiful condition but is missing its metal plates.

The XBox arrived last night and I've taken the cover off. Not touched the heatsink yet. The cae appears to be very brittle and someone has been here before as lots of small broken grey tabs fell out. The photos show the hdd grill was broken when sent and the one at the other end came out in three parts. Caps look like they need attention.

You mentioned about Jasper, how do I tell?

I've taken some shots of the mobo as is.
Caps
CPU
Whole Mobo

If you need other/closer shots to identify let me know

Hi Vince, my right joycon rail on the oled has become a little loose which makes the joycon wiggly. Do you know what's the best way to fix this?
Metal joycon clips!! The plastic clips that hold the joycons in wear and eventually the joycon becomes lose.

You can normally identify the model from the power port... second let me see if I can find a diagram.

Take a look at the images in this reddit post..

It looks like I have the 203w psu, and have got one for a few £s from ebay coming. Mine says it's 09/09/2007 machine, so that would make it a Zephyr?
I was reading about the Red Ring earlier, so it look like as this isn't a jasper, I may be in for some hassle? I don't mind as I bought this as a learner and it currently owes me about £30 (controller + new battery + psu + hd video leads).

Red ring of death (RROD) is a complete pain. There were many ‘fixes’ over the years - nylon washers to apply more pressure from the heatsink onto the CPU, heating the board in the oven for a time, etc., but all were nothing more than a sticking plaster, as it would almost always return at some point. A reball is the only proper fix, but as Vince already said, you’d need the correct equipment to do it.

Should be a good project to cut your teeth on though, just don’t set your expectations too high and you’ll enjoy it!

First port of call is a thoroughly good clean. Pop off the heat sink all new heat compound. Is there a stencil of that chipset to re-ball it? I have a hot air station and a hot plate (coming from China).

Not sure a reball is something that can be done without a BGA station. @Vince will be able to confirm I hope!

Reballing the chip will unlikely fix the problem long term, what will is swapping it for a chip from a later model which had a redesign on an improved node. its not actually the solder balls that keep this chip on the board that are the issue more the joints that keep the actual die on the interposer that are problamatic, effectively the issue is something that is internal to the chip itself.
