Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Finally got round to fixing the left stick drift on my PS5 pad today. Bought a 5 pack of replacement sticks and used this method where you don't need to unsolder all of the pins in a oner to take the whole stick off, just do the H and V pots individually one at a time. Was actually very simple. Now I can finish Unicorn Overlord.

This works pretty well if the actual stick isn't worn. I did a load of elite pads last day or 2 and they all had worn sticks so was far too much play in the middle of the stick

Absolutely. I know from doing this I would have absolutely no chance without a proper vacuum desoldering iron like in this video, if I was taking the whole thing off, so yeah this is only if the stick itself is still ok. Mind you, even taking the two pots off first will reduce the total number of holes you have to 100% fully clear in order to pull the main stick off, so you might be able to give it a go with getting those off first and see how it would go with just a wick, and maybe still be able to put the pots back on if it becomes clear its not going to come off to at least still have a working controller.

Hi Vince
I might be way off here given the thread title so apologies in advance, but the googles pointed me your way. I have a dead Gigabyte 3080 ti Gaming OC and wondered if you do repairs or if you can point me in the direction of a cost effective repair. It was an ebay buy 2 years back but I got a black screen a few days ago and PC wouldn't boot just a red vga led on the MB. GPU fans spin but no other sign of life.

Anyway, hope you can help in some way.
Thanks

@Vince

Would you be willing to take a look at a gopro mate?
Midget took it in the water with the battery door not closed properly so think water damage :(
Not sure if there's much can be done for it like

That game gear looks superb too!

Scratch that, I've found someone to have look at it.

It's been a while I'm just so busy with proper work at the moment I'm not getting the same amount of time but business comes and goes as we know so eventually it will sort itself out. Let's talk about some repairs...

@Armageus pad is on the way back to him the original board wasn't a happy board so I just swapped the board rather than spend a lifetime looking for why it wasn't happy. Swapped in some halls and yea... Hopefully one happy camper.

Then there is @jaybee keyboard... I've only started working on this last few nights, apologies my man.

All of the visas for the LEDs are missing so we went ahead and did our own thing and sort of wired it all up and made it work. I connected the cathode side to ground for each led coming off the anchors for the USB ports, anode side I just rebuilt the original traces....

you can see from this image that the original LED's would have had a 1k resistor on the cathode which on these modern pink led's is totally pointless so instead we just wired them straight into common ground.

Interestingly with regards to the brighter keys that you took the LED's from less used area of the keyboard, this keyboard runs a full line of LED's in series so caps lock, a, s, d, f etc along a line are all on the same rails which means that you cant simply isolate voltage for a single LED without affecting all the others along that line as well, you could potentially isolate the annode side on just that led but to be honest its not worth doing.

End result though all your caps lock, scroll lock and num lock led's are sorted and working. I masked it all up and threw it back together:

I don't know how you fit repairing so much stuff in. My dualsense is still sitting in bits after changing the sticks, because "tomorrow" will definitely be the day I put the back paddle kit on and finish it and it's the only thing I have to do. You just crank out repairs like a machine :)

I've not had a chance to do much either, because Real Life, but I have sorted a PS4 recently, although I've not managed to get it's blu ray working again even after swapping for one form China.

I have picked up an interesting fix for a Eufy video door bell. Micro USB charging socket has been mashed, so hopefully just a quick swap will sort it.

@Vince: How to you take screen shots off your microscope? The doorbell appears to have a second charging mechanism with 5 small holes on the underside of the base. I can't find a 'charger' for it here or in China, so wanted to put a photo of it out there for anyone to help with identifying.

My microscope is connected to my machine via OBS so everything is live recorded direct to my machine. In terms of the charger device you could just wire it into a bench supply and see if it works before finding the right kit. Last night I may have carried on until late... Got a ps4 slim done and a full GG mod done as well :)

Sometimes I just flow and it just happens in a kind of seamless fashion which is the way I would like it to be really. Recently though I have been working hard on the proper work so have really had to kick myself into gear and motivate myself to get it done. Some evenings its a chore rather than enjoyment because I would rather sit and chill, read a book, play a game or whatever. When I get going though I do really enjoy the process. I also find myself being a bit selective and not all items sent to me are equal, some things I cant wait to get my hands on and others sit looking at me until I can force myself into it. Like the keyboard above, dunno why but it just wasn't singing to me and literally sat in the package it was sent in until Sunday just gone. Items that dont sing just simply sit a bit longer, once I had it open though I thoroughly enjoyed fixing it.
