They're so common most don't think about it much but occasionally i realise that pretty much all games we consider good involve weapons and violence, now i like it as much as the next guy but why is there such a lack of top titles that don't involve anything of a negative nature?

Where are first person games that don't involve a weapon of some kind?

I can only think of portal which surprisingly turned out to be a great but short game, however you're still essentially shooting using a weapon like device, also I don't think you could play a puzzle game involving nothing but portals like that unless it was massively improved in complexity as the same old style would grow boring, there must be other styles of game play that doesn't involve either weapons and violence or puzzles in a first person style game, of course there are other game types like sports and stuff but rarely anything that good.

I guess violent games are attractive to people as they reward you and provide an experience which arguably isnt possible in real life without consequences.

The funny thing is is how some violent games get passed off as kids games, Kung Fu Panda comes to mind. I've seen a few trailers & I have to say it's violence, but with cartoon characters instead of people.

Games allow you to experience stuff that would never be possible to do in real life. Until the censors attitude to sex changes then violence is the next best thing. Also we can do violence better in games than humor, love, comradeship anything like that.

Why would you have an FPS (First Person Shooter), when you can't actually shoot any thing?

There are games out there for you, mostly nintendo titles ;)

Try reading the op's question ;)

Even a lot of nintendo games involve vanquishing enemies, jumping on their heads ala mario for example. I'd think it's quite risky for developers to experiment and go away from the established genres that seem to generate revenue regardless of quality, hence a market that seems well saturated with fps's.

I enjoyed the puzzle aspects of Portal but it was still possible to inflict damage on enemies using the gun, and the computer was certainly interesting with it's attitude ...

I guess Shenmue is a good example of a game that doesn't require guns to advance the plot of a game (it does feature some violence however, like in the opening scene, and is more 3rd person than first).

I read the question, but just didn't get it.

There are games you can play which don't involve killing or maiming people. In terms of first person though.. what on earth would you do? First person shoe shopping? First person walk in the park?

What it boils down to, is that there isn't any thing interesting enough to do that I can think of. The idea of a game is that you aren't doing something which you can do every day. E.g Play for Liverpool, Drive an F1 car, Shoot some dealers e.t.c

I think it's a shame that games rely so much on violence. Not that I have a problem with violent games, but it would be nice to have a bit more variety. I guess the problem is it's quite difficult to find something entertaining for the player to do that isn't violent in some way.

Then again, films and TV probably aren't that different in this sense. I suppose you have romance films, but pretty much everything else revolves around some kind of combat. I'd like to see how a game based around romance could work (and no, those dodgy porn games on newgrounds don't count).

I quite like it when a game presents you with a choice, examples of which would be Fallout where you can talk your way out of nearly any conflict, or, metal gear solid, where as everyone knows it is possible to complete them without killing a single soldier.

I also think games like condemned have an interesting approach, where violence IS necessary but it is so graphic and disturbing that its actually very unpleasant to kill.

Exactly, i just find it odd when i stop to think about it, don't get me wrong i enjoy them but i just wonder why its this way, it basically seems to come down to destruction/bad vs. creation/good and for some reason the former wins with the majority, sure its fun no doubt but why, is there something inherently wrong with humans that things are this way?

Wait, was I not supposed to be enjoying killing in that game?

To the OP, while the majority of games are violent in some sense there are plenty of non-violent games around, in the form of sports games, driving games, and others such as bully and GH. When it comes to first person games though, there is not a lot you could have someone doing that would make sense other than shooting.

Though one thing I would like is a game using the GTA engine, where you play a detective, running around trying to solve crimes. Sure, some of it may revolve around violence, such as solving a murder, but it would not necessarily be a violent game.

Not really true though is it? There are huge swathes of popular games that frequently hit the top ten that are non violent. Obviously FPS games by their nature tend to be violent, but gaming is not all FPS games.

I like games that give you the ability to kill, but don't require it - the Thief series on PC for example, or Splinter Cell for either.

Scort.

One game I can recall, similar to this, is Gabriel Knight 3 on the PC - it was more of a point and click adventure granted, but being able to control the camera in first person; thus allowing you to look for clues, added to the enjoyment.

Scort.

It is true though, the vast majority of games involve weapons, violence and stuff of a destructive or negative nature, im not sure if you're the sort who likes to nit pick and argue for the sake of it but that’s how I and I imagine most people see if they stop to take a look, really your left with sports and puzzles and they're rarely that popular except for the odd racing or football game, I don't consider small arcade games and similar because they're not the kind of games im talking about here, not much else comes to mind, anyone?

Toy Story on the mega drive had a first person doom style 3D level where you had to collect the 3 eyed aliens. Was pretty pants though from what i can remember.
