Violent games.

Well I guess on the PC there are "non violent" games that can give a sense of achievement - train, flight and ship simulators where you can chill. Though if you pile your 747 into the tarmac at Heathrow, 300 "sims" are about to have a very bad day...

Also part of the attraction is strategy and tactics. Military or combat strategy in COD4 or even something like C&C exercises your survival instincts far better than re-arranging abstract blocks in Tetris or Puzzle Bobble... If you get it wrong, your character or little army meets an untimely demise. Even leaders with the most benign intentions in Civ end up going to war eventually.

Anyhow there's something gratifying after a hard day at work going on a rampage in GTA SA with a katana or combat shotgun and seeing how many heads you can take...
