Virgin 50Mb Broadband

God knows how many virgin customers have a high power for there upload im sure that is the problem ive been having for a few months .
Virgin sent engineer out put some attunator on and said it was fine but then gave me another four off them and said if the ready light starts flashing try another one .
problem is VM are the only one above 2mb in this area so im stuck i know the power level changes but when it comes down to me doing the engineers job its one big joke :(
I just now wish ntl were still about .:D

have you checked what Power levels your modem is at? sometimes these are the cause of poor speeds/ dropouts etc

in your browser type http://192.168.100.1

In the list click Upstream and check

Power Level
(dBmV)

Then click Downstream

Power Level
(dBmV)

post the readings of these

ideally the upstream power should be 50 or less don't
want it in the mid to high 50's or thaat is trouble

in the downstream ideally we want to be close to zero or even minus
can get away with +3-5 but too high and this would be another trouble zone.

Can i ask what you mean by trouble if the upstream is more than 50 ?

Mine has been @ 58.21 since installed a few months ago and always get drop outs (normally after the bill has been paid )

I'd get that looked at, it will give problems.

Get yourself a 5dB attenuator, should sort it out for you. You are really on the limit with 12dBmV, needs to be as close to 0 as possilbe. Mine is around -3dBmV

Apparently you "should" be OK anywhere between +10dBmV and -10dBmV

I have a 12DB forward path equaliser attached to the modem, is this necessary? Is it somehow limiting speed? Could I get a 5dB one perhaps?

Your down levels are fine, your upload is a little low though.

edit - try removing the 12dB inline and see what your power levels are again.

well i've had mine in just under a week and we're already without tv and broadband. Apparently it's affecting Birmingham, Dudley and Wolverhampton. Thing is i live in halesowen! Been down since late last night. Gutted as Dirt 2 is out at midnight and was hoping to download and have a spin :(

Yes quite, sometime mine burst's upto that on news servers, but settles to around 5900-6100kB/s

May I ask what news proggie you use Jay?

Just to confirm, I was previously using Newsleecher and was getting 5.99MB/s, but for that same download but using Newsbin Pro, it reported 6.8mb/s (54Mbit/s)

And I double checked the ETA between them, the difference was around 14 minutes difference according to the programs time monitor.

Could it be that newsleecher is not as efficient as Newsbin Pro?

I use Alt.bin and Astraweb on SSL.

I would guess newsbin may be slightly over estimating your speed if your sustaining 6.8MB/sec.
