Virgin 50mp. Minimum Speed

bit of a quick question here but is it documented anywhere regarding what the minimum speed would be for people on 50mb?

i have a service engineer at home with the Mrs who is sorting our power levels out as i was only receiving 20 > 25mb.

he has said it is only speeds UPTO 50mb so would probably only see speeds of 35mb or more.

i thought if you had 50mb the minimum you would/should reveive is 45mb.

sorry if this is confusing just wanted to ask whilst he is still there
 
Having issues with mine at the moment.

Technician who came out to ours today said to my fiancee the 28meg test was acceptable... yeah :rolleyes:
 
technician has gone and apparently we now have a principle tech coming Saturday to sort it out.

also when mine was installed it was done by a service engineer and just placed everything into the living room even though the computer is in the back lounge as he said wireless would be fine.

today's tech guy has said if I tell the principle tech this on Saturday he'll run a connection into the back so I can connect through Ethernet rather than wireless.
 
Well fingers crossed that solves your problem. I have a very similar problem to you connected wirelessly, through the router with a cable, or direct in to the modem!
 
im on 10mbit and they keep restricting me to 300kb and i've not even been with them 2 weeks they are rubbish.

Even with the traffic management kicking in, you should still get 3.3mbit (~360k/s). Have you contacted them to resolve it?

Although there are some people having issues, generally most get the full speed more or less, however like all packages, it is always 'up to' 50mbit. Don't forget that not all websites and places and send data to you at the full speed and it really comes into its own with multiple users.

well engineer sorted the down stream power levels out. just the upstream to do.

oh and my speeds are still crap.

thing is i've moved 10 doors round the corner and it's now dropped right out.

i've still got the modem which was connected to my old house and the service engineer who came out said it might cause issues with syncing up etc or going into the walled garden
 
well i have an update

I recently purchased some home-plugs from the MM and just installed them.
All i can say is wow. I tested the download speed using ATI CCC as i always seem to get a decent speed.

Wireless was 2.3 > 2.6mbps

Homeplugs 6 > 6.8mbps

to say i'm pleased is an understatement

signal quality is strong with my rate @ 197mbps

this is my speed test results now

 
Nice result magicroundabout. :) As above, most people do indeed get their full 50 megs (and a little bit more thanks to VM giving the overheads on top). I get 6.32MB/sec (50.6 megs/sec) all day every day. :D You just don't tend to hear from those with nothing to complain about. lol

BTW I know it's moot now, but VM are only supposed to be allowed to send out a principal tech for 50 meg calls. It's policy. Something to bear in mind if you ever need to contact them again; though fingers crossed you don't!

Not a clue mate, never used them. Next! :D :p Hopefully someone else can help.

BTW as a point of future reference for you and anyone else who searches out this thread... VM will generally, as a matter of policy, classify anything under 40 megs as a fault on the 50 meg service. If you don't get the result you're after the first time, ring back and speak to someone senior, reminding them of this fact.

Is this <40meg thing for definate? Heard lots of different values.

It's the figure the VM employees on the Cable Forum always quote, yeah. VM have a potentially excellent thing on their hands. Decent network (some areas needing upgrades notwithstanding), but the hit-and-miss service can let them down. :( If they pulled their socks up they'd be a phenomenal ISP.

At least the forthcoming upload upgrades (10:1) will make huge improvements, especially in ex-Telewest areas. To make 10:1 upload (50/5, 20/2 etc) feasible they'll need to properly overhaul and install new kit on the head end so that should make a big difference to those areas suffering sub-par service atm. Fingers crossed for those guys. I'm one of the lucky ones thankfully.
 
Take no notice of the engineers. Cable broadband is not like ADSL broadband. With ADSL the speed you get depends on the quality of your telephone line and how far away you are from the exchange. With cable that is not the case. If you pay for 50 meg broadband then you should get 50 meg. Don't give up until you get the speed you pay for.
 
With Virgin you would only get 50Mbps if your cabinet was right outside your door.

Oh I see you're not complaining now that you're getting your 50Mbps, tbh you shouldn't be complaining at 25Mbps either :) no ISP will ever guarantee you X speed
