virgin broadband, how long until full speed?

They've passed to supervisor to supervisor and came to the conclusion that they didnt know what was going on, great.

so they've boosted my speed and if i dont see anything change for 2-3 days phone back...

i was on the phone for over 2hrs just to be told that. Im rather tired of it already, and ive been with them since friday.

Ring up again. You got fobbed of with ******** in my opinion.

Yeah I'm used to it... I've been told enough **** to fill a rather large hole. They tried to blame it on my computer being riddled with viruses and poor CPU usage so that's why it was losing 50mbps...

But even when I try it on my gaming computer I still get less than 30mbps. So I have literally no clue.

know it won't help with your speed , but remember to keep notes on all your calls (times/dates etc) until its fixed then check with them about money back/off the bill.

never heard of virgin needing time to get up to speed , from everything i've seen the speed is usually within 1mb of your line speed, unless theres an issue or your area is oversubscribed.

I have kept notes and names, and asked them to keep everything ive done on our record. And i doubt it is oversubscribed, i live in a 10 house cul de sac with only 3 other houses with virgin. so unless its very busy far down the line im not sure, but close to the house itself shouldn't be a problem.

Ive tried on my win 7 computer, vista laptop, xp computer and my ipad and they all have the same results. And no one told me i would start at 30 and double and my router says its at 60. Also i doubt there is a problem with the line since everything was freshly installed by technicians.

Have you tried any decent speed test sites?

Have you tried disabling your anti virus webshield or even the antivirus altogether and testing?

Also I never said you would start at 30 and then get upgraded I just said 60mb may be a tad bit ropey in your area but I also said its very unlikely.

Also if your wired connection does perform worse than your wireless have you tried a new lead?

What ones are decent? VMspeed?

Ive disabled Anti virus, no difference.

And ive tried 2 wires, both less than 2 meters, so i doubt they are losing anything along the journey.

Thats your upload speed. Its at 3MB. Your downstream is the figure above it "66000000bps".

Your downstream power levels are a bit on the high side. But not enough to cause those issues really.

sorry i missed that then, i just noticed a number begging with 3 and went a bit crazy inside. Still not sure of the issue though, ive used the speedtest swordfish suggested and its still very variant between 10-30 meg.

As daft as it sounds, I wouldn't recommend using any of the speedtest sites for accurately measuring your actual broadband speed; I've never had good results from speedtest.net in particular. Find a good, fast site, download a large file and watch the speed. The link horrorwood posted would be a good bet.

When I had my 100Mbit installed the engineer was there well above 2 hours and ~75% of that was him blundering around the super-hub and my PC, messing with various settings and running speed tests on a variety of different checkers. In the end I politely asked him to gtfo my PC and found an ISO on mirrorservice.org - 9.2Mbps. Fired up my torrent client - 10.6Mbps.

I swear I heard a huge sigh of relief from him as he left.

I have used multiple downloads to test speed aswell. Which i was also told to do by the virgin forums.

Ive got a few demos and things off steam and they max from about 3.1-3.5Mb.

Which is still around 28mbps. And quite a distance of 60mbps. Ive also had the virgin people take over my laptop to see if they could fix the issue.

2 conclusions were made.

1. They didn't know what was wrong.

2. They tried to blame me losing 40mbps of internet on a few pointless viruses i may of had on my laptop. But then again ive tried speed tests and downloads on my Ipad, which is assured not to have viruses and its still pretty much same speed. Also on my gaming pc and still its <30mpbs.
