Virgin for gaming

VM in Nottingham for 10 years or more now, I can count on one hand how many times there has been a problem with it. Never had any issues with billing, upgrades or downgrades.

The only thing i find annoying is you still need to have a land line, with them for the TV. More expensive to get rid of it.

Been very happy with VM.

Just ran a test now and got this. Ping is usually around 10-15 normally though I think.

I'm probably going to give it a go, if it sucks in the first 30 days I'll use their bail out clause. Thank you all for your responses. Have a good Easter.

yea superhub is the worst piece of crap when it comes to wifi through even a single wall.

my old dgl4300 ancient router gave a much better signal

I've never done a ping test before ...not really sure what it means...but i know i never have any issues when gaming ie never lost connection ever :)

I'm in North London / Camden Town area

i find my 100mb line very good on pretty much everything except super street fighter 4 which allways seems to be laggy in peak hours althou that could down to gfwl :[

Exactly the same here in West Surrey - BT been promising Infinity for 3 years now (2 meg if I am lucky but in the 100Ks mostly :( ), just not enabling it (even mailed a complaint to the top banana who thanked me for my info and offered half price if I signed up for 18 months. So Virgin it will be when I get round to changing.

Any advice/feedback would be most appreciated. My ADSL connection is ~3MB, I've got 3 kids, 2 of which are now old enough to want to stream TV etc. I'm considering the 100Mb package and am aware of the virgin 30day money back g'tee.

Thanks for reading.

As everyone else seems to be saying. Whether your Virgin connection is any good or not will depend on the area, and more specifically, on who is responsible for maintaining the cable network historically and presently.

For example. I worked in Edinburgh as a Telewest (now Virgin) installer via a staffing agency. We were on a fairly low hourly rate, were treated like **** whilst having immense pressure placed upon us. Thus, techs were forced to cut corners and/or ended up hating the job and the company and the quality of the physical network really suffered. By the time I left, a new agency had come in (Cobra) and new starts under these chunts were not even given an hourly rate, but were on bogus self employed 'piece rate' contracts. Thus, the quality of the cable network in the more populous and transient areas of the city was generally not the greatest.

In contrast, in the Perthshire/Angus area of scotland, the techs there were all on decent tradesman wages with proper company contracts. I remember watching a Telewest guy install my mothers internet which turned out to be a much bigger job than it was on paper. Unlike in other areas of Scotland at the time, this 'surprise' was no big deal to the install tech who took as long as he needed to do a good n proper job.

In short, it is not the cable technology that you need to worry about, but the quality of its maintenance over the years.

If you have the cash, I would recommend that you just go with Zen internet, whether it be fibreoptic or ADSL. From this company, you are guaranteed the very best possible connection that your home can receive.

It is good but if you have any issues don't expect the greatest deal of support, had a guy come out to have a look and see why my upload speeds were so poor, didn't really know much other than how to check power levels to see if they were making a difference.

Ended up sitting and watching El Classico with me while having a footie chat instead :D

As others have said, it really depends on where you live.

I moved house in October and went with Virgin and the first two months were horrible. Really bad pings during the evening and it was just rather unreliable. I'm not sure what happened, but one day all the problems just went away and it's been near enough perfect for me ever since.

Sounds reasonable. Just make sure that you don't believe any lies about "faults" and "fix dates" as they will invariably be just that - lies. Also keep in mind the time of year when you first test things. For instance, in student areas the connection will be much worse when the students are around (not their fault - the network should be able to deal with the extra load).

Well something strange happened today, spoke to Virgin about the FaF deal I could get (not that good a deal) said I'd speak to the wife first. Checked Sky's website for fttc for my telephone/postcode and it was available, checked plusnet again available and BT the same with an estimated connection of 80/20. Seems they've enabled my cabinet so went for FTTC via plusnet in the end with cashback from quidco. Thanks to all that responded hopefully I havent upset anyone by going fttc in the end.

Cheers

I think you've made a safer choice to be honest :)
