Virgin Media Discussion Thread

New H5 arrived today as they said it would, will get time later to install it and see if its wifi is better.
Make sure you don't put it off. I was going to do mine 'tomorrow', and a few days later our service died. No Internet, red ring around the SH4. The stats said online, but only on one downstream channel. I thought the DD must have failed somehow and they'd cut us off, but nope - and the stats confirmed Network Access: Allowed. Then I twigged... Plugged in the new SH5 and it booted and came online. I guess they set a self-destruct once your new hub is in the post. :D

As for the WiFi, it's quite decent for what it is. Mine still got shoved straight into modem mode, but a quick out-of-the-box test beforehand showed 850Mbps down on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Conversely, my Ruckus R710 enterprise AP (Wireless AC) managed 520Mbps.

ok that is great to hear, I got the hub5 box but am still using my hub3 and 350Mbps broadband.

There was some talk on the hotuk thread saying it only works on the 1gig fibre service so not sure it will work on the 350Mbps service, maybe I can just give it a shot.

Yes I think they blacklist the old device once its sent out. My brother had his Hub 5 delivered but hadn't had time to install it. They had a brief power cut and the old Hub 3 came up saying 'Notallowed' - swapping out for the Hub 5 then worked.

edit: Swapped Dad's hub out earlier and the Hub 5 didn't connect right away ('Notallowed') but he got a text 30 mins later saying its now set up (will go over later to double check this is actually the case).

Needed to call them up to activate the hub5, they needed the mac address since it was still showing the old hub one but once they sent the signal took a few minutes and bam the Puma is dead.

Works perfectly fine with lower broadband speeds (350-500) VM staff insisted only on 1gig fibre..... since they want that sale no doubt.

Feels more snappy the speedtest dns server gets located much quicker then before but could just be me, but ill test it with Openvpn and WG VPN clients and see if its more stable and reliable over the next few days.

Yea, just wanted the working day done first in case of any problems, its now in and am pleasantly surprised at how much better signal my docked laptop etc gets in the second room away now. Also set up my BQM a little while later so will see how it looks compared to the old one.

Here's my before and after TBB plots with the header (and my WAN IP) cropped off. Bear in mind these are both in modem mode, with an x86 edge router.

The outgoing Hub 4 (Puma6):

The new Hub 5 (Broadcom):

I'm running a Tor relay, amongst a dozen other servers, so my latency actually appears worse than it is. I have ICMP on low priority to not interfere with the server traffic. Quite a nice improvement, though obviously still a far cry from FTTP.

Yep same here Barclay Approved.....

Hello All,
I'm getting Virgin installed in a couple of weeks, it's 1Gig so assume it'll be the Hub 5 from the off...

How Does the WiFi cope wiith lots of devices? I've got loads of 2.4 Light bulbs / Plug Sockets / Sensors / Alexa's etc

My PC's will be wired, in the past I've put the ISP router straight into modem mode and used third part routers (currently have a few Huawei AX3 (WiFi 6) I use for my router and some in repeater mode)
Any thoughts on the Hub 5 and lots of devices?

Cheers

With VM it is simple folly to assume anything! ;)

I just had a new 1Gig connection and they sent a Hub4! If I were you I would call them up, speak to someone in a British call centre and stipulate you want a Hub5. If they confirm you will get one, get the name and team of the person you are speaking to and record the time. (I record all my conversations with VM)

Then cross your fingers and pray when you open that box is not the square shaped top of the SH4!

It's an engineer install, so hopefully he/she will have one in the Van...

Side not, I text (online chat) Virgin twice to set up the account, both times I requested a transcription of the chat...neither came through to my email...I took screenshot's of them, but still bit dodgy?
(I had the install "fee" dropped, so wanted confirmation...never came!)
