Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hi all, moving into a new house in the next couple of months and virgin is an option for us. We are looking at a phone, tv and net package.

I have never seen or experienced cable and none of my friends use it either, so I was hoping for opinions.

I will not be needing sports or movies and would probably go for the 150mb net. My main concern is traffic shaping, how much does it actually come in to play? I don't download crazy amounts but I would miss my current 60mbit infinity speeds. I mainly play RPG type games online with very rare fps sessions.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I pretty much hammer my line (5-10gb a day, occasionally much more) and must say I've not noticed traffic shaping on the 150mb package.

Pings and latency have all been very good for me, but as ever with Virgin: YMMV :D

So I just phoned cancellations and asked to leave (I'm in my cooling off period), and they offered me nothing to keep me. They asked why I want to leave and I told them that I was disappointed I got the 6 month half price offer when 2 days later the 12 month offer came out. He said he can't give me that, and "if I were to buy a tv from the shop for £500 then the next day it was £400 it would be just tough". I told him that isn't true, very often shops would honour this and give you the cheaper price, he disagreed. Anyway, he was pretty much useless so I said cheerio and wished him a happy BANK HOLIDAY.

Back to Sky then.

Call again and say you didn't appreciate the lack of support from the last person, you can easily get them to give you that deal.

Great hold of the right person and they bend over backwards to help, like most companies

They already switched me off. I have 6 days left until my cooling off period ends. I said I'd call back on that 6th day to cancel then, he said I can;t do that now I've said I'm leaving. I said, so if I bought a shirt, returned it because I didn't want it, but then changed my mind again in the shop and decided I wanted to keep it, the shop wouldn't let me keep it... got my back up and essentially I concluded **** VM, simply on the incompetence of one customer services guy :)

if I wrote off every company on that basis, i'd have no companies left to goto.

look up the customer care manager on linkedin and vent, see how quickly things get sorted then!

Heh, sad case of affairs isn't it. Have looked on Linkedin. No contact info on there though. Fact of the matter is though, there are other choices to VM, and the local Sky guy I know said he can do me whatever package I want half price. No point hunting for VM service if they don't want my custom.

VM have sorted mine out now.

125Mb\XXL phone\1000 minutes(a month) to call anything anywhere\Std TV for £39.99 all in.

if your local sky guy can do that then I don't know why you would even consider VM.

For me personally, it's not been without it's problems, but no more than BT (who incorrectly sent bailiffs to my place) or Eclipse.

90% of the time it's trouble free, if it does screw up then I get a fair chunk knocked off.

My biggest issues with them is the engineers blaming each other and the first line support is just pointless

Agreed! I've had that. The engineers who installed it were blaming the salesman that got things wrong regarding the installation. The experience I have had of the few staff that work for them has just been of incompetence.

I wanted vm over sky just for the Internet speeds, but having looked at sky's fastest speeds, they should be sufficient anyway.

Well in a refreshing turn of events I'm left with a satisfying result I think.

Added a phone line to my BB only account and the engineer came round yesterday to install. VM said they could not waver the install fee but would halve it to £25. The engineer spent around 2 hours here routing cabling to where I wanted and also spent some time getting to the connection box down the road which has been blocked by the council and their never ending rebuild projects for the road and neighbouring estate making the box hard to get to.

The engineer then said he had no notes to port a number but would chase up today from the office as customer services should have done this by now. He said he'd call or text. I received a text just now saying the number porting is in progress and can take up to 10 days and to call his mobile if there are any other issues or questions.

Top guy!

Damn internet keeps dropping. Service has been degrading over the last 12 months. Not sure what to do tbh. Been with cable for years > C&W > Blueyonder > VM and never had any problems.. until recently. They are reluctant that to send an engineer. :(

Nice.

I just rang up the Sales team today to see if I could get TV M+ added to my 100mb broadband. She quoted me £49 !!! I was like errr I pay £14.25 currently and when I go online it says I can upgrade to TV M+ for £13 extra. So that would mean £27.25. I rang up as I was trying to see if they'd waiver the £49.50 installation fee (for what, it only needs plugging in to the socket.) She said as I had a goodwill discount she could not offer a contract with it on. So now I am awaiting a call back from the outbound team (apparently this is who I got the original £14.25 deal with last August.

Hopefully they can get me a good deal. Don't really want to pay any more than £25 for BB and TV M+

This anything to worry about and worth contacting VM to look at?

Do you mean the post-RS errors? if they keep mounting then I would report it but if they've stopped it could just have been a temporary network fault or Virgin doing some maintenance? your downstream signals look fine.
