Virgin Media Discussion Thread

All of VM is over copper, there are just some new areas where the fibre cable goes as far as the outside wall of someone's house rather than to a headend. Rolling out gigabit doesn't require fibre, it just requires the network topology to be sensible and interference to be low which is easier to achieve with the RFoG deployments.
Oh yeah I know gigabit doesn't require fibre, I just wasn't sure whether Virgin were deploying gigabit over copper yet. As all installs I've seen so far have been FTTP RFoG connections.

I’m not too sure what to do, I have spoken to VM about this and was told that with the current situation, engineers aren’t visiting people’s houses.

Suppose I could reply and ask him for his VM ID number and see if it matches when I call customer service again.

Virgin engineer's are visiting homes, work colleague just had Virgin installed.

It's likely to be genuine, how would a random scammer know you are with Virgin have new router and no longer using the old one. You don't need to let them in your house, just ask for ID at the door and hand over your old router.

I’ve been in touch with VM customer service, they sent me an email stating engineers are in the area and are collecting old equipment. :)

Not bothered about them coming to my house, just wanted to check the legitimacy of the text and phone calls. :)

They can jog on if they try that with me! The hub3 will get returned as and when they send me a new hub without packet loss and latency spike issues (so not the hub4 either by the sound of it). Until that time I stay running the hub2.5 and the hub3 sits on the shelf until such time as I have to return it at the end of my time with them.

Perhaps, but its still working fine for majority.
For general use, yeah absolutely. For people who aren't playing games at a casual level, it's absolutely fine.

But I had an absolute nightmare from when I got a Hub 3, until the day I ditched it after moving to BT. So for around a year or so.

I don't know why Virgin can't seem to get a handle on the hardware they provide or the equipment they build their network with, but it always seems to be a weak point in the service offering. The amount of brown boxes on people's walls you see with covers missing compared to the grey BT capping that seems to last forever, or the BT master socket vs. the different isolator enclosures that Virgin have been through - the last time I had an install done the isolator didn't fit inside the box so the installers just sort of got the screws to bite and called it a day. It all results in poor first impressions.

No problems here since the updated firmware dropped, probably a year or so ago at least. Its not an issue anymore. Could just be one of the unlucky ones in bad areas.

Everything else was fine, just not games.

It's still a problem for a lot of Americans as well, where there are a lot more people using Puma 6 based modems. It's definitely not fixed completely, just not every game exposes the issue. More complicated games with more demanding IO expose it more.

Seems legit enough?

Seems poor form just texting you from a random mobile number - I'd expect at least official correspondence first telling you who and what to expect even if the individual dealing with it contacts you later from a mobile phone, etc. or a message from an official number.

Americans using Virgin Media? Which games expose it more? I play all sorts of stuff without issue. Son also plays a lot of Xbox online without issue.

I game a lot and have not had any problems at all.
Low ping of between 10-15 most of the time.
Had a few hiccups with the Hub3, but got myself a cheap Archer and has been fine ever since.

No, lots of Americans have modems that use the Puma 6 chipset with DOCIS bases ISPs. Like Comcast.

Games with a high APM like Fortnite can expose it a lot. If you're doing a lot of things fast, you start to notice you're taking damage when you shouldn't be. Being shot through and around walls, etc.

It was less of an issue on more simple shooter games after the patches, but I can assure that the "fix" was just a software mitigation that masked the issue as best as possible.

There's a Reddit thread from 2 weeks ago discussing the issues still being present.

Been like this since 20th April, and getting progressively worse. Reckon I'm entitled to some compo? Forums are beyond useless at the moment, call centre was on hold for yonks earlier. Nobody seems to be replying to anything so I don't fancy my chances of an engineer any time soon.

Compo for what?

Periodic and sustained packet loss, terrible connection quality over a sustained period and little recourse to do anything about it at the moment.

Certainly doesn’t for me. Can make mine unresponsive on demand by opening up too many states!

Got VM to agree to cancelling my contract without penalty because of it.

It’s substandard hardware and has been from day 1, even the VM engineers (three of them!) said as much.
