Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Had a terrible day yesterday, first time in about 6 months I couldn't game as the connection was ****ing me off:

Hoping it's just a blip of serious congestion due to the snow rather than indication that things haven't changed a damn bit.
if you have superhub try rebooting it.

Just gave VM my 30 day notice and hopping over to sky, Had enough of the high utilisation problem, had it for over a year and maybe could have waited abit more time but the customer service rep I spoke to on the phone with a surly attitude was the icing on the cake. Hope I made the right choice....:)

I've got a supposedly 60MB connection and i'm only getting 25MB this morning, assuming no one else in my area is on the internet at this moment (4am). Web pages are sometimes slow to load and BF3 is impossible to play at any time of the day.

1 year of nothing but trouble with Virgin and i've been with them for god knows how long (not that it makes any difference).

Time to move on I think.

I was only getting 25meg whilst on wifi but wired is wicked

Streaming in generally is a massive issue and it has been since October, hell even live BBC one TV via iPlayer is stopping randomly to catch up.
My connection on Monday night drop for 3-4 hours and it was throttled Tuesday night with not enough data downloaded to hit the 50% cap.

got a letter from VM, saying my speed has been doubled to 100mb (50mb before). so i quickly checked the VM box status page, indeed 100mb

so done few speedtests. i'm getting slower speed than before!!!! what can i do?

What speeds are you getting? Can you post speedtest.net screens from 3 different servers?

i got an old VM modem so it possible it's not fast enough for 100mb?

The black modem or blue one? I was told by VM that the blue one won't support 100Mb (the black is even older still).

You should have been given a superhub!

Oh the VMNG300, I had that at one point too on 30-60MB

They replaced it with the hub when I got 100 though.

Give them a ring and get it swapped? :D

Put the hub in modem only mode and continue to use your current router.

ALTHOUGH, what router do you have currently?

good question, my router is WRT54GL with tomoato firmware. i ALWAYS pull down 6mb/s everywhere and anytime.

upgraded to 100mb is slower than i'm getting before

That router does not support 100Mb, you need a new router :) I swapped out my WRT54GL running Tomato long ago (back in the 30Mb days).

You can confirm this by plugging the modem into your PC directly and re-running speedtest.

really? surely the WAN port on WRT54GL is 100mb (i'm pretty sure), well maybe 90mb due the overhead. im'm getting 30mb speedtest now.

i'm gonna try do the speedtest directly from the hub. brb

Port speed is irrelevant. The router doesn't have the processing power to route from WAN to LAN & LAN to WAN @ 100Mb/s. You definitely need a new router if you want to overcome the bottleneck.
