Virgin Media hosted STEAM Content server

Something positive, nothing major but at least heading in the right direction.

If you could all please forward the thread to your friends, family and pets so we can keep the thread at the top of the forum and feel free to add Kudos if you like :)

Who are the management of blueyonder ? Msybe we can find the co-founder of blueyonder to buy out VM and go back to Blueyonder again.

NTL bought blueyonder , NTL paid monies to virgin so they could use the virgin brand name.

blueyonder cant just buy there way out

Don't think VM won't be interesting hearing this. They only do for themselves not the customers want. I doubt it will happen.

This.

They can't even be arsed to fix the 20Mb internet in my area (broken for over 5 weeks now), I'm pretty sure they won't spend any time or money on this.

You would think as well that Valve would jump at the chance to get some of the load off their own systems and onto the ISPs.

So it's really got to be down to if VM want to do it?

Love the idea Gimpymoo!

Have you considered setting up an online petition? It might drum up more interest than having to register on the VM forums and thern posting within that thread. Clearly you could link to the petition from both forums thereby maximising interest.

Good luck and I will be watching this develop with interest!

I posted a message on the website,

Sorry for abit of a thread necro but It'd be very good if virgin got this up and running ( sitting on 500kbs and im downloading a 20gb game)

BE should do one as well, being known as the "gamers ISP" and all that (well they used to be anyway, don't know if they still are)

Minor update:

Virgin Media hosted STEAM Content server?

Hi the only update I can give you about this is that we are pursuing this idea with Steam at the moment but we don't have any other news right now. As soon as we have some I'll post it to the forum, but that could be some months away at this point.

Thanks

Encouraging.

Great idea.

I also remember those BY servers, there was another ISP too, but I can't think for the life of me at this time of day :p

Yep looks hopeful. I find the Belgium steam server worked the best for me when the UK ones were slow.

Problem is that a big and fast enough server might well cost more to power than the bandwidth it would save. I'm not sure precisely, as it would depend on how much bandwidth steam downloads consume on the network.

"Off network" traffic costs ISP's money.

Internal traffic is "free" (well, as free as it can be) so in financial terms, over the long term, it would be financially viable.

Also, if they leveraged it correctly, it could be a good marketing tool for them among gamers as the benefits would be very well received if the servers are managed correctly.
