I've got virgin coming in on Tuesday to install a broadband, tv and phone package to replace my current sky package but I'm just wondering about a couple of things....

1) am i ok to take down the sky dish myself and remove the equipment?
2) what will virgin need to do in the house?
3) do they install a new phone socket or use the existing one?

Run cables along skirting board and drill though walls

That's debatable:

It's my neighbours house, in the second picture before the wire is clipped to the wall after running on top of the drive there is a coil in the corner of about 1 meter, I'll try and get a picture tomorrow, it really is a shoddy job. Also notice how they went around the drainpipe rather than behind.

that is awful! i'm going to make sure they put cables where i want

I'm giong to take the dish etc down as I dont really want it up, I'm getting the house painted this year so would rather not paint around it plus it was the former owner putting it onto our victorian cottage which ruins the look in a way.

is there any conditions as to where the phone socket has to be?

they'll put stuff where ever you want.

Thy probably hate me, can you put that there, no don't run the cable there, I'd rather it go here, can you leave me some extra cable encase I want to move teh box around. Thats a good Idea I get about 5 meters spare and coil it up behind TV, that way if you want to move tv/box to a different corner of teh room, it just means buying some cable clips and running the cable along.

Unlucky. No way you can cancel?

This man speaks sensible words. I have had it installed a few times (from student house to my house many a year later). Left to their own devices you'll get an unqualified cowboy rock up with a 18" drillbit and start wacking holes in the side of your house.

with the amount of technicians/mechanics they have around here i'm surprised if they do a good job with anything. Our house is fine though, wires are neat.

There's like 3 technicians which can do a certain something which the others can't to cover like half of the county or something stupid ..

when they did my house some 7 or so years ago the guy explained what he wanted to do before he did it rather than steam ahead and do something i might not like

technicians are barely skilled monkeys who come in and take a reading you could take your self.

if its out of spec which you can find out yourself they contact the "network" people for your area of which there isnt very many because they are well trained and probably get paid a lot more

Virgin media are a ******* joke with their installs. Makes me laugh that they charge for the service and call it an installation.

A neighbour had their coax cable running over the drive way. A concrete drive way Virgin media gave them a 2 metre plastic protective tubing over the cable.. great protection against a car!

My install was just as bad.. they didn't make any attempts to tack the cable down.. just left it going across the middle of the carpet in the basement.

then you should have MANUP and told him "i hope your not planning to leave that cable like that"
rather than say good job bye! then run to the internet

When NTL came to install our cable we had about 20m of trench dug from the road around to the side with the cable in it. Through some gravel covered driveway.

The tech probably took one look at your neighbours concrete and thought sod that :p

They've never done anything but a good job with me regarding installation etc. Been with NTL and then virgin for years and it is much better, in my experience, than sky, bt etc. Had a broadband outage for 4 hours this week and that was the only one I can recall the past few years.

I have always had a great experience with VM. The technician has always asked me where I want the cables and the points and done a good job in fulfulling the asks.

Been with them since it as nynex, then ntl and now vm, only ever had one complaint which was an overcharged bill, they refunded the whole bill and gave me an extra month for free.
I always get the advertised speed.
You do hear some bad stories but fortunately for me I've only had a good experience with them.
