Virgin Media re-thinks throttling policy

I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad.

I can't say I'll notice much of a change, I hardly ever get above 10mb anyway.

actually im very copulated off about this...

The middleweight "L" package will be slowed down from 4Mbit/s to 1Mbit/s downstream if they download 800MB before 4pm and 9pm. Their threshold is set to rise slightly from the current 750MB. Uploads will be throttled to 128Kbit/s once 325MB has gone up the line. "L" punters seem to have faired worst in the update - they're currently only throttled to 2MBit/s downstream.

i was perfectly happy before this with the throttling situation. it seemed reasonable and fair. now im being forced down to a mere 1mb, i mean wtf and who tf do these sons of *&^%$%^ think they are ? after all the bloody support ive been giving them over their cable service. im telling you now if this comes in, im going to be-online. *&^% them.

Remember that's only if you're in the top 3% of subscribers who regularly exceed this FUP not if you do it once every week or something as irregular as that.

Even then I think it's still pretty slack, I mean I'm no mass abuser but I do like to have my fair share of movie/docu watching as I spend most of my time on Google video watching hour long shows and movies.

My personal (not including my LAN users) daily usage for the past 2+ weeks is as follows

Yet I've still always been able to get full 20MB speeds, here's a trailer I just downloaded for example:

And that's over wireless! On Vista!

I think throttling the top 3% of FUP exceeding subscribers is quite fair, heck even 5% at the moment if pretty fair.

For £29/month on 20MB I think I'm quite happy!

Is it actually only targeting the top 3%, or is that just the spiel that VM are quoting - the status quo was only supposed to affect the top few percent, but everyone gets throttled once you go over the limit...

^ as tolien said... I popped home a few weeks ago. My old man barely uses his connection so will never have gone over the limit (confirmed by lookign at his router stats) yet the first time I was on, half hour later I was throttled.

spiel:o

I work full time min 12 hours a day & only use my connection in the evenings & weekends, yet everytime I go over 350mb I'm throttled, how I'm in the top 3% is beyond me:confused:

Also, I've browsed google and VM, but has the throttle policy always applied to weekends? I was under the impression it was 4-12 weeknights...

If you install QTLITE instead of Quicktime you can download HD trailers directly to your hdd and rename them to .hdmov which plays using the CoreAAC/AVC decoders. Virtually no cpu usage with those :)

between 4pm and 9pm. thats not bad tbh. if it really is ONLY for the top 3%, people will have little to worry about. you still have the other 19 hours of the day without throttling.

I think a good example of how lame this is is that if someone on the "Large" package downloads a demo from XBOX Live, that alone gets them slammed on to the degraded service.

Basically they want to sell you faster and faster broadband, but they don't want you to use it.

I only had mine connected last tuesday but i am more than happy with it, £22 month for 20 meg and i always seem to get 2.3mbs, slowest i had at evenings/nights atm is 1.7mbs can handle that seeing as i was on 3 meg adsl max before.

One thing though what can you dl a month through them, the chap on the phone said you can do what you want but am sure if you hit 300 gig or somet they would complain, i only ask as my brother does download a lot.

if you do it between 4 and 9......

And i bet their customer support is as shoddy as it ever has been. In fact you even have to pay for it now don't you?
I move into my new house in January, and although i used to have ntl cable at my old house for 5 years without any gripes, i'm not sure i'll take on virgin as they seem to suck as much as a christmas whore!

You do have to pay to ring the customer service for the broadband, but if it is their fault they refund you the 25p per minute.
