Virgin Media 'Speed Capping'

I bet you're just getting low speeds due to issues with the UBR, unless you can find written proof that they have limited everyone on that UBR to 5mb, I won't believe you - not that it's an issue :)

I take offence to what you say, as I have only said what I was told by VM Technical Support and that was that everyone who share my UBR is being capped to perform maintenance on the UBR. The tone of your reply makes me believe that you are under the impression that I am lying and I started this thread as I have nothing better to do.

Again I state my case, I was told there were no probelms with my connection and that the reason for sloww speeds was either

1) A virus

2) P"P Software

3) Malware/Spyware.

All of which are untrue. After 46 minutes of discussion I was told I was and so was everyone I finished my phone call my speed was back to normal and I did not get capped until the next day.

Again my position is that VM are at it and can and will cap to suit their own pleasure as the majority of people will not notice it.

This thread has nothing to do with on-line gaming, something which I dont do, but merely a rant at the way VM seem to think they can treat there cusotmers. (And I am one there so called VIP Customers)

I think we need to create a thread where people can post, time, ping, speed and how much they've downloaded that hour (to see if they should be capped or not). Then we can start to see if Virgin are capping everyone or just the top 5% which I dont believe.

Good idea. Just a pointer though its only the top 3% now apparently yet everyone I know who is on VM gets capped ijn the evening. Again something I dont have a problem with if its done correclty and timed properly.

That's not capping, that's oversubscription. Traffic Management applies to everyone but is enforced on a per-connection basis. Oversubscription affects everyone routed through a particular line card in a particular UBR. It's a case of too many customers sharing too little bandwidth.

Yup, same with me. It's not every night that I get capped and I don't care if I have been downloading. But it's quite rare that I download huge amounts, and when I haven't been downloading and my ping sucks and loading websites becomes a pain, it starts to get very annoying.

If a thread is made, probably a good idea to take results at two different points each day (in and out of peak hours).

Is there's a reliable site for speedtests? I know there's Speedtest.net but I've seen people post on here saying it's not a reliable site to use.

Same here, I get capped at weekends pretty much permanently. I dont mind too much as I am a very heavy downloader, so its fair enough. Just dont believe what they tell you on the web site.
My understanding is that they changed the capping so I am limited to 1Mb between 4-9 and OK after. was formerly 2Mb between 4-11. Apparently, that was why they had the huge outage not that long ago, they rolled out the change and their network fell over - now thats what I call Karma :D

As the OP I want to share an update to this thread.

AT 10:03 this morning I got manageed again, and on speaking to Level 1 Tech Support I was told that there was maintenace planned on my UBR. On checking the VM site I noticed that there was no maintenance on my UBR at all....

So follows another phone call at which point I was told there was a problem with the UBR and it was getting sorted. Two minutes later they re-booted my modem and said everything was fine.

My download speed was now being maxed out at 1.7 meg. The level 1 tech support could not understand it and after some discussion I was eventually put through to level 2 support who told me the truth straight off. The traffic management software (supplied by CISCO) HAS A FAULT, and can and will cap at any time any connection to their network. Only way to resolve this is for level 2 to take my modem off the UBR and reset it each time I get capped during the day. At least he was honest. Apperently CISCO are working on a repair but no time frame is in place for completition.

What level of service are you on (M, L or XL) and what rate are you seeing your connection getting capped at?

I got capped about 9:30pm the other night.

Saw something I wanted to download at 7pm, so waited until after 9 so I wouldn't get capped (it was over 3GB). Started downloading not long after 9, and was getting full speed until around half past when my speeds shot down to 580KB/s. Was like that until I went to bed at 1am-ish.

On XL (20meg)

Others nights I've been fine after 9pm without getting capped.
