Virgin Media Suck!

Usually. Your property is connected to the cabinet round the corner, thus being connected to the local uBR. The uBR is in turn connected to the switch/hub.

If you've got any problems with your VM service, check the newsgroups. ;)

Which newsgroupd are best to keep up with the service status of VM?

hi
try connecting your computer directly to your cable modem. with my netgear router connected my connection speed drops down to 2meg speeds on 20meg when i was on 4meg it was fine thats with only me connected to the router

also try looking at your modem operation config http://192.168.100.1/ deafault username and password is root & root it took them 2 weeks of phone calls for them to even acknowlodge that my modem config hadnt been updated it should show these numbers

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000

next thing do you live in a high bandwidth area? i used to live by stoke uni's halls of residence every room must have had a 10meg modem lol when i made the move to 10meg there was no chance for me accept for half term

hope this helps

Aye it is in a student housing area, pretty much multiple occupancy housing all over the place hooked up to cheap cable leeching all the time.

Agreed the newsgroups are usually a lot better for support than ringing up the premium line.

For all those complaining...

Download this.

Then run it on this.

You will get 10+Mbps every time. Unless there is actually a problem with Virgin Media and your connection, which from 'speed' tests alone, you cannot ascertain.

That's brilliant. However, still going to quit VM because pings are slow anf the wife's VPN connection to the office is abysmal. (Worked great on NTL cable, which we had previously.) Intend to migrate to Be once contract runs out.

Ginga

picked a couple of random files to dl 565kb/sec surely thats somewhat still off the pace!??

andr3w1984 yes occaisonally d/l torrents of game demos why's that?

Just asking, too much downloading can result in a cap in bandwidth. Not sure if virgin do it though but might be worth asking.

Yup, if you're on Virgin Media 20mb and you download 1.2GB between 4-9pm your speed wil be temporarily traffic managed down to 5Mb. This will last for 5 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

pabloB - You posted your test results at 9:40pm which makes me think you hit the limit.

Virgin Media Traffic management info available here : http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

I'v not really had much of a problem with VM & the speeds. I almost always hit around 18-20mbps.

But this UNfair use policy is too much now.

Have narrowed my choice of potential future providers down to:
Bethere
&
O2

I know O2 own Be, but will the level of service be the same?

Not quite. Your speed gets managed to 5mbit if you download more than 3GB (not 1.2GB) between 4pm and 9pm or if you upload 1.25GB during the same hours.

You are only capped when your usage is deemed to be at a level necessary to degrade other users' performance, and even at the reduced rate you are still getting a faster speed than the average UK ADSL user receives.

Why is it unfair?

You do realise that equals to about 20mins of downloading time? If somone downloading for 20 mins degrades the network I think Virgin Media should shut up shop.

Am more than happy with this system its nice for once not having download limits and having to monitor everything to make sure i don't go over a cap like i had on adsl max, and as stated the 5 meg you get restricted to is still faster than most adsl users get.

Well you're entitled to your opinion. Nevertheless I'm willing to believe VM have put quite a bit more research into the matter than you have.

On a sidenote, I remember when I first got broadband with BT. Their one any only package had a monthly download limit of 1GB. I thought it was huge!
