Virgin set to adopt three strikes policy

if the copywrite holders of the porn you are illegaly obtaining record your IP on the torrent, and then send that to the ISP requesting that you stop you will get 1 strike against you in this new 3 strike system.

Load of rubbish i download tv shows from usenet but if i can't no longer there is no real point in having 20meg imo, ill downgrade or jump ship and go on sky and get the internet free for just basic stuff.

VM might aswell forget about releasing a 50meg connection as no one is going to want it for browsing around the net etc.

I think the general idea is to get rid of the illegal stuff - but at the same time make available far more legal stuff. See iPlayer, 4OD, ITV's F1 coverage, BT Vision (downloaded video rental)... IPTV is real. I watch far more IPTV than I do regularly broadcast stuff these days.

Why do people even use P2P or Torrents? Is it because they dont understand how to use Usenet? Because i cant think of a sane reason to go anywhere near P2P, its utter rubbish compared to Usenet and you run the risk of people loggin you.

Agreed.

Its not an option for everyone due to the price. Take giganews as an example, if you want to download the popular shows every week (lost, heroes, prison break etc...) you would need the silver package, or one of the unlimited packges if you wanted to watch them in HD. thats a minimum of $18 a month already, $25 if you want the unlimited package. Then add another $5 if you want ssl and an extra 10 connections. Which works out at $23 for 25gb/month or $30 for unlimited (so £11.50 and £15 for the 2 options, more if your bank charges extra for overseas billing).

Now, add up the charges of torrents.... £0

Now do you see why people dont use usenet? £15 isnt affordable for a lot of people, not everyone has jobs, or good enough jobs to cover expenses like that. Also, when i used the giganews trial, personaly i thought it wasnt quite as good as torrents. With 10 connections, i couldnt max out my connection like i can with torrents, and its a pain to download several gig of headers for each group when you first start out.

They have to be carefull.

Upset too many and subscribers wil leave taking at least their internet and phone line subscriptions with them.

Yes, but the people that leave will be the heavy users that low users subsidise. Most ISPs actually make a loss with their high usage customers, so they wont shed any tears if they go elsewhere....

Very good point - ISPs would love their top 10% of downloaders clear off! A pro-active stance against piracy might be an ideal way of doing this.

Funny i can max out 20 meg on 10 connections plus you don't need to download headers just use sites as you would with torrents, there are plenty of usenet providers out there not just giganews, ones for £7 a month unlimited with ssl and decent retention.

Torrents are total rubbish and there is no way you would get 2.3mbs on them like i get on usenet, ive used them in the past but i would prefer not to bother than go back to them, slow speeds no security usenet well worth the small amount you pay a month for the speed alone, hit connect and bang full speed all the time.

havnt read the lot but surely usenet users use indexing sites to get the nzb file so surely that can be monitored?

I tried several (actually five) of those alternative providers, which I don't need to name here. The max retention offered was 100 days for binaries, and they sucked. All of them. It's extremely annoying to pick out a download (eg the latest rc for Debian GNU/Linux) and find your download turning red/black (bad blocks) because the NSP doesn't have enough completion, or doesn't host that group.

Giganews has 200 days retention, and for £15 a month how many hundreds of distros can you download? Excellent value for money compared with buying boxed DVD distros individually every day... They're about a fiver each those things!

I get 2.4mB/s on my torrents all the time, screw your usenet I'm doing just fine here thanks.

Ill believe that when i see it with torrents, you goto let seeders etc build up no way in the world u get full speed instantly like usenet plus i like the fact am private with ssl.

Im not calling you a liar but i doubt that very much, firstly thats the max vm offer which theoretically is never reached normally, factor in to that over heads and well i doubt it

Well I can't prove it for obvious reasons but it does happen, let me say though there are always lots of seeders.

I tried searching with a website, but its results were quite limited, it came up with nowhere near as many matches as searching a group after downloading the full header.

In the whole time I've been using Usenet, I've never had to mess about downloading headers. Between *that* search engine and the .NZB files posted on a certain website, there has never been anything I can't find.

Seriously, when you know how to use Usenet properly torrents don't come close.
