I would be grateful for some advice . I have managed to get a virus on my computer that is posing as the Security Centre. This isnt the problem as I have found lots of advice telling me how to resolve and get rid of it. The problem is the virus is totally blocking all my system access. It lets me open sounds info, word documents etc, but if i want to go to anything that involves systems it wont open. I thought therefore the easiest way was just to reinstall the whole system but i have encoutered a problem. I have a winfast system and it appears that the manufacturers recently included a password on the bios during an install. I cannot find this password anywhere. Can anyone suggest any solution to me, someone who is not very technical, as I know you guys seem to know everything about anything. :D

You should be able to get rid of the CMOS password by removing the CMOS battery. Is it a desktop or laptop?

Have you tried booting in safe mode and running msconfig?

I'd say if you're able to back up everything you need, just format the drive and reinstall windows. That's the only way to be sure you've got rid of all the nasties. It may appear as though there's only one piece of malicious software on there, but if that managed to get in, there's a good chance there's more.

I assume this is XP, so my next advice would be to consider upgrading to Windows 7 if your hardware permits. The way it works is a lot more secure than XP, and it is generally less prone to the type of rubbish you describe.

i got a simmiar thing via a drive-by on the piratebay last week, i ended up reformating - it's a real pig of a virus if u got what i had.

Couldnt run .exe's or anything.

edit: this was my XP machine, not my vista one. safemode made no odds, it was quicker to reformat than mess about with it. boo!

This should work:

1.Download Malware-Bytes, scan if you can and find location.(or any virus software like AVG/Avast and so on)
2.Write location down on paper.
3.Reboot safemode with F8.
4.Select start windows in safemode just the standard option will do.
5.Go to location of file and delete.
6.Reboot and start normally then it should be fine.(do a re-scan to see but Malware-Bytes is generally really good.)

if its what i had, it wont work. i tried s&d, malwarebytes, hijack this, messed about with regedit, etc etc.

sometimes its more efficient to draw a line and reformat.

Almost always it's more efficient to format in my experience. Once they're in it's very difficult to know you've cleaned everything too. Factor in research and the amount of scan time and titting about manually removing stuff and you could have reformatted, or if you're sensible, restored a disc image of a fresh install +applications.

Still a problem

Okay I have tried to delete the programme in safemode, i have tried to run the malware in safemode and nothing. The virus came up whilst in safemode and blocked my system folders like in normal mode.

Someone suggested reformatting but i still cannot get past the password. i have removed the battery and nothing still is asking for a password. Can someone explain step procedure to reformat or how to get rid of this password.

Any further suggestions would be gratefully received.

***okay even more issues....seems nothing is now going to work i cant even get past the boot screen now, it gives me bluie screen and closed down system. The only option now is to find this password. Any help would be useful. I have gone on manu site foxcon and they referme to the "readmefirst.pdf" i cannot find this anywhere.

Looking more and more like a new machine is goingto be required, possibly a good thing :)

Remove HDD and scan with another computer / leave the HDD and scan with the same computer using a different installation of windows on another hard drive.

Windows 7 isn't virus proof, what would you have said if he was on it already

This

Only way to get rid of it, unless you remove it manually by booting from a linux based boot cd (like bart pe).

That wasn't what I said. I said it was much more secure than XP. If he was on Win 7 I would have said give it an honest go at getting rid first, though don't waste much time as a format is usually better.
