How do I get a serial number, I have downloaded the 64bit version to have a play with but it is asking me for a number?
This has been answered about a dozen times already in this thread...

Hint: Microsoft website

So far so good with Vista, very stable just a little buggy (as expected). Has anybody with an X-FI and the Beta Vista Creative drivers managed to solve the 2 speaker only issue with a quad set up?
As I said earlier, that's a limitation of the Creative Drivers. There is no solution unless you can persuade them to write new drivers. I believe it even says it's Stereo only on their site.

I installed Vista and had it uninstalled within 20 minutes of use. It seemed increadible slow on my machine with an AMD64 3500+ and 2GB ram. Im also not convinced its any better than XP, the only difference I see is loads of flashy toolbars. My computer seemed non-existant and there was no real way to navigate except going through run or my documents.

What are others opinions on vista? I cant see myself buying it on release.
Whereas it feels faster than XP on a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and 512Mb RAM. It's all beta driver swings and roundabouts really - the final will be a different story.

There's so much stuff that's been improved over XP - I've had it running for three weeks so far, and I'm still discovering new things.

And 'My Computer' is still there - now called 'Computer'. It's in (or at least can be added to) the start menu, and can be added to the desktop. Both in the same way as XP.

Duno if this has been mentioned already,

The Beta 2 is only a 14 day trial, and you cant activate it online
It hasn't been mentioned because it's incorrect.

It's a 1 year trial, or a trial until June 2007 (whichever comes first. Obviously that's June 2007 now). It's very easy to activate online using your CD Key you obtained from MS, or over the phone if you can't get internet access.

i installed it yesterday (32bit version), and it comes up with a prompt you have 14 days to activate etc etc.. but when you click activate it doesnt let you using the cd key i was emailed
this is using a install from 14th June, using the microsoft downloader
A couple of suggestions then:

1. Check you actually have internet access (my wireless occasionally doesn't work when i boot up for unknown reasons!)
2. If it still doesn't work, goto the ms website for another key (link in the OP). You're allowed 2 different keys for this beta, so you should get a different one. Goto system properties, click 'change product key' and type the new one.
3. If it still won't activate using the second key, try ringing ms (i believe there's an option for phone activation). Should just be a machine dishing out activation keys if you give it the number it requires from your screen.

So whats Daemon tools for!? I thought that mounted the image to a spare 15gb on my HD!?

All i'm asking is that if I mount it to my external HD (via USB) will i be able to dual boot!?
I think you need to define what you mean by mount, because I don't think it's what anyone else understands mount to mean based on the context you're using it in.

You can use daemon tools to mount the image in a virtual dvd drive in XP. You can then install off this onto a hard disk. Someone in this thread has already tried to install to a USB drive and had no joy.

Just installed and activated the 32 Bit version....From what i can see it does look rather good but it's running horribly for me......My HDD won't shut the hell up while it's running.....Sounds like it's defraggin, it runs like a slideshow when i'm doing literally nothing....Move the mouse, 3 second freeze, move mouse, 3 second freeze......And it keeps doing that and i have to reboot :o
It shouldn't have any performance impact, but different hardware causes different problems until the drivers are all sorted properly.

You are right though - after installation the HDD is defragged and indexed in the background.

Hi,

About to install. I have a raptor with XP pro on it at the moment - will I need to make a partition, or will it install without making a mess of XP?
Any options during install that I need to select to stop it making a mess of XP?
You need a separate partition or it'll almost definitely make a mess.

whenever i try to download the 64 bit version of the file my browser (or download manager) attempts to download a 13 meg iso containing only a readme

ive flushed DNS

CTRL + F5

cleared history and cache

but stil it continues to think the Iso is 13meg

what have i missed ?
Most of the thread?

It's either because you download manager/browser doesn't support files over 4Gb, or your ISP uses transparent proxies (e.g. NTL) that don't support files over 4Gb.

The question you should really be asking yourself is do you really need 64-bit? 32-bit would be most advisable due to higher compatibility at this stage.

OT: Does anyone know the exact release date for Vista cos ive heard Jan07 and now April07...

which one to belive?
RTM is still set for October 25th 2006, then to business VLK users in November. Retail release depends on how long it takes for them to print it all - supposed to be starting January 07, giving them Christmas off.

am I being a nob here ?

I can download the 3Gb file...,
....but not actually get a key for it ?
Actually, MS won't give you the links to the files anymore either - although they are in the OP. But yes, MS are no longer handing out keys.
