I was gonna get Ultimate x64 OEM, but thats fell on its face with driver and other problems.

Now Im tempted at Vista premium, but im not sure wich?

the upgrade retail version looks very good at £140 and you dont need to worry about hardware changes. What would be the pros cons of this compared to the full premium retail for £200?

Is it worth getting premium over ultimate, for us gamers? I also watch movies /footy and stuff too.

What problems have you got with ultimate??

Same issues will arise with any version of vista dude,

Its all the same interface with just some extras depending on the version you get.

So premium wont work any better than ultimate.

For the upgrade version to work, you will need to have a valid key for the version of windows your upgrading from.

Problem is with Ultimate is price.. I could afford an OEM but want to be able to change hardware.

At the mo I have XP Home OEM installed, that has a valid key. Would I be able to use an upgrade version of vista with this?

You would still be limited to your motherboard with upgrade. If you change your motherboard than your OEM XP Home will not work and therefore your vista upgrade licence would not be valid.

The retail version of Home Premium is by far the way forward for those of us who use the machine for lots gaming and are also on the ball with new hardware etc.

Yeah. For most it is the choice between ultimate OEM and home premium retail.

No, Remote Desktop is only in Business, Enterprise and Ultimate, I believe.

The common thing on here seems to separate the three versions.

Are you purely a gamer? Then get Home Basic. You don't need the fancy features as you won't be able to use/see them when you're in a game process.

Do you want to game and have Media Center capability? Then get Home Premium.

Do you want to game, have Media Center and Remote Desktop? Then get Ultimate.

Ultimate OEM for me then... well not for another few months, i need to wait for crysis and see how it looks on dx9 before upgrading to dx10, I highly doubt the dx10 version will be too different and crytek even said the x9 side of crysis looks better than other developers dx10 of what they have seen!

Darn it say it ent so  So I'd need an XP Retail to upgrade to Vista HP without the motherboard restriction? My current system wont run Vista to well (AMD 3800+ Single Venice, 2GB ram, 7900gt) but I want to upgrade to Vista now then build a new C2D system later this year :(

Not necessarily, I have an upgrade version of Windows XP Professional and it'll accept the install CD from any prior (95/NT 3.5 onwards) versions of Windows. Not sure if Vista will do the same.

Edit: just found out you need 2000 or XP to use the upgrade edition.

Depends on if you have more then one PC,I have 3 PCs(all with XP at the moment) so going OEM Vista on each one is more sense and better value for money in my case,I intend to install OEM Vista HP on PC1 then 2 years down the road upgrade PC2 with a new OEM Vista HP,then 2 years after that upgrade my PC NO.3 with another OEM version.By time I get back to PC1 probably be a new Microsoft OS out by then, and even if I wanted to buy another OEM Vista HP ,still cost effective.

ok I tried out RealVNC, it seems ok I guess if I have to go for home premium vista...would like a few more features though like you get in Remote Desktop.

sorry i didnt get back to you earlier Jimbo,

yep as said, xp home oem would be an invalid license if you changed ya mobo.

It sucks.

I would say go for Vista x64 Home Premium. It has all the features you would need. Vista Home Basic is just that, too basic which is a shame, but ms it seems knows how to lock down an os.

Vista Home Premium seems to be the sweet spot. @ 200+ i think it is a bit expensive, but bear in mind you are going to be using it for the next say 5 years, with free updates and the ability to use it on any 1 machine its not too bad.

Luckily i get a free vista home premium upgrade on this laptop. 32bit only though, so its going to leave me shelling out on the retail to use on my main rig.
