VISTA is on its way!!

Naaaa, wasn't saying that - or at least that's not what I meant. Alien and Aliens (screw Alien 3 and Resurrection) are the daddies of all sci-fi films :)

I was making a point that anything spent on "material" things is a waste BTW ;)

Nah of course not, you can get a lot of long-term enjoyment out of a DVD... material things give our pleasure and joy a physical incarnation so we can see them and hear them and feel that happiness again and again.

That's a bit of a namby pamby way of putting it but you can't lump all material possesions in the same bag, they all have different values and meanings... some worthless some extraordinarily valuable. :)

You can only get the FREE Vista upgrade if you got your Windows XP pre-installed on a full system from a MS approved system builder. You will need an invoice showing the full system and a designated MS build ID number which only approved MS system builders such as HP, DELL can give etc.

So the free upgrade to Vista coupon is irrelevant for 99% of people. Hence you wont get a free upgrade and hence why OcUK does not advertise the fact of this.

Out of interest if HP and DELL have the largest market share of PC sales (well over 30%) how is it irrelevant for 99% of people ?

In fact if OCUK is an approved MS system builders (for your 300-400 builds per month) many of your customers could well benefit from this or am I mistaken/confused?

no i just believe there are better things money could go towards
You could say that about anything. It's called having a life; it makes things interesting.. different people decide what they want to buy etc.

:) Yup, apparently there's ~40 hours of bonus footage/documentaries on this 9 disc box set :D

Humm, the OEM rules are confusing me slightly. If i have to pay for a new license every time i upgrade then I may as well buy retail. Im sure to upgrade at least twice in 5 years. I wonder what MS would say if you called and said you had a MB fault and it needed replacing. Not really an upgrade then. I dont suppose anyone has an answer for this though.

I know with XP I have an OEM version and have called MS 3 times after upgrades. No problems getting a new key.

I currently use xp pro, however i have transfered it from my old pc (became a server) to my new one but i had to call up ms to explain, the guy said it was perfectly ok as long as i didnt have it on the old machine, it also activated fine. :)
I still am not 100% sure if you can transfer but i dont think you are actually allowed, hence im getting retail to avoid the problem.

The motherboard needs to be replaced under a warrenty claim with a similar board as supplied by the manufacturer. So that doesn't really work.

Cmager: I think the loophole is in the definition of a 'system builder', which in most cases for OcUK is the customer.

If it's OEM, then the MS representative you spoke to is wrong. OEM licences are non-transferable.

 I didn't spot that. That's a pretty damn big loop hole!

Hi there

Just to clarify Vista OEM is identical to XP OEM in regards to changing hardware etc.

When you change your motherboard at the moment with XP it too will demand you get a new re-activation and/or license. Yet just as I myself have done you just call them, tell them your PC crashed and they give you a new key over the phone. Hence problem sorted. :)

P.S. As you guys are asking for it, I shall get the Retail and Upgrade versions on the site too. :)

Gibbo what do you mean tell them your PC crashed lol?, i fail to see how this washes with them?

Think I'll be getting Vista 64bit. Been using XP Pro 64bit for around a year now (I think it's been a year anyway) and haven't really had any problems with 64 bit even a year ago with drivers etc.

Any problems I've had with 64bit with installing are usually easily fixed by using Dosbox and letting the exe run that way.

Call of duty: United Offensive however was the only game which I couldn't get to work.

I suppose you could say your motherboard died, so had to buy a new one.

And you wouldn't be licenced and MS could tell you where to go, unless you provide proof of a warrenty claim.

I guess I was lucky the last time I pulled that :D

Personally I'm going to go for Vista Business. I will need full remote access stuff and would like to play DX10 games. Sticking with XP will leave me in the lurch. Looks like I've been Microshafted :D

Here's the definition of 'system builder' from the system builder licence:

“System builder”
means an original equipment manufacturer, or an assembler, reassembler, or installer of software on computer
systems.

So yes, I think that's where the loophole lies.

Maybe if you're the System Builder, you could claim against yourself.. and just be generous :D

Is anyone but me really not that excited about the Aero interface? I think I'd probably end up turning it off or using a different theme anyway, and I'm pretty sure the benchmark crowd aren't going to want all the associated crap running with it?
