One other thing...

I currently have XP Pro OEM. If I order the Home Premium Upgrade can anyone (ideally yourself Gibbo) positively confirm two things:

1. That it will still let me do a clean install into an empty partition and will simply prompt for my XP Pro CD (and possibly serial) during installation?

2. That, when prompted for the XP Pro CD, the OEM one I have will work (i.e. I don't need a full retail CD/serial?)

I can confirm both.

I think what is an important question is this, I for one reformat every so often as a spring clean is a good idea for your pc, in this instance would I be better off with retail than OEM.............................or would it be better to just wait and see what transpires:eek:

OEM is fine as long as your not making huge hardware changes.

As long as you don't change any hardware you can reformat with OEM as many times as you want the differenct is with retail is that you can change hardware AND reformat as many times as you want :).

This is the jist of it...

I'm probably going to chance it with the OEM version, although I do plan on buying a new motherboard in the next few months (i'm waiting for that 'ideal' mATX Conroe motherboard).

A bit risky I guess, but I really don't have the money lying around for a retail version.

Why don't you just wait until the board comes out before buying Vista?

Think ill go for the Ultimate OEM, the word Ultimate makes me want it! I always go by, Buy the best of the range and it'll cause less headaches in the future.

One question though, is RAID easier to set up in Vista?

Thanks in advance!

I could be waiting forever. I'm looking for a motherboard with good overclocking options in a microATX package. There is nothing like that at the moment, however there have been reports around the web that good things are in the pipeline. The drawback is that they could take weeks, months, or maybe just days.

i have re-installed xp pro (oem) plenty of times on my computer(s).

i first installed it on an athlon xp machine, then on athlon64. changed the hard drive a couple of times in here and its activated ok. the most recent time i re-installed though it said i have installed it too many times and i had to phone microsoft.

phoned up, automated service asked a couple of questions. where did you get your copy of the operating system (retail outlet or pre-installed) and, have you recently made any major hardware changes.

then the automated service just read out a new activation code for me.

I cant believe how much we are being ripped off here in the UK on the retail versions. No competitor talk please!

This is especially bad even for the UK. 325 itself was a **** take, 365 is just ludicrous IMO. Certainly arent encouraging folk to buy the retail intead of OEM are they. Id like to buy the retail, but not at that flipping price. OEM it is.

Those price differences between regions takes the michael, though "at least" they are ripping off the whole of Europe equally.

i jave am socket 939 mobo with 2 gig of ram its an asus slip premium, will it change to ddr333 when i install 2 more gigs of ram? can i not just change the fsb to compensate?or will it be unstable as people r suggesting 2 gigs is the bare minimum

lol well I don't know about anybody else but I know very little about Vista. I'm sticking with XP. But looking at the 'pre-order' page all I can say is, I'm too confused, there are over 15 to choose from! That is taking the michael and the prices too.

Yep I do think MS have made it much more complicated than it needs to be. They should just have a home and a business version, like with XP. Home Basic should be binned as most people will not want it.

As for people saying these prices are good, how much did you expect? It is priced around the same level XP was when it came out, and around a third more expensive than XP is currently.

For activation? Unlimited.
You sure about that?

I always thought the primary purpose of the activation system introduced with XP was to prevent people casually giving/lending/copying their XP CD to friends to install on another computer. If MS are prepared to give away activation codes ad infinitum due to hardware changes, how do they differentiate upgrades from an install on a totally different machine?
