VISTA is on its way!!

Just reading about the differences between the various versions of vista from here
and found this
"Features Missing from Both Home Basic and Premium

* No support for two processors"

Does this mean you need the ultimate edition if you have a dual core cpu?

I don't think so. I think that means two physical processors not multiple cores on one processor. So dual/quad core should be OK as it is one physical processor.

The Home editions support one physical CPU. In Vista this CPU can have as many cores as you like - there is no limit like there was on XP.

They should just have a home and a business version, like with XP. Home Basic should be binned as most people will not want it.
Maybe not in the UK, my understanding is that the basic version is intended for the emerging markets to head off piracy.

We can see why people use copies etc. Microsoft should price the software at a more reasonable level.
Sorry but that is just not true. How many people would buy full Ultimate retail? If you have a PC already you almost certainly have an OS so you buy an upgrade. If you don't have an OS you buy OEM.

This isn't aimed at you PCknight by the way.

It's amasing how many people can apparently afford £200 for a CPU or £150 - £300 for a graphics card that lasts them a year or two. The same people complain about, and think it's OK to nick a copy of an OS that's £149 for the retail upgrade of Home Prem and will last them for 5 years on every new pc they own.

I'm not getting into the whole piracy thing here but MS aren't the only people charging for the software, OCUK, the distributors, transport companies, CD manufacturers, packaging, etc etc etc all make a slice. People don't pirate software because they can't afford it, they pirate software because they can get away with it. People cheerfully pirate games at £30 and DVDs at £12, price doesn't come into it, greed and dishonesty do.

Hi there

We now hope to have Vista OEM in stock by end of next week, see my other thread about Vista arriving early. :)

A new (different) motherboard would need a new license AFAIK, so no.

Are you saying that if i bought a new motherboard, cpu etc later on, i would have to buy any MS vista DVD? if so i dont see why

also will they be limited to the ammount of times u can install it on your system? as i re format like 6 times a year! lol

The amount of times you can reinstall on the same hardware should be infinite, but if you make big changes to your hardware like the motherboard then to all intents and purposes it is a new computer, hence a new license is needed. (For the OEM versions of Vista.)

Exactly the point I was making, albeit a bit more succinctly put :)

All the retail and upgrade will give you is a few automatic activations before you're back to phoning them up for one just as you are with OEM.

It means you can update your machine and reinstall if necessary as many time as you need to. You are still only licensed to install to one PC at a time.

i am hopeing to change my motherboard, cpu and RAM in 1-2 years time, dont want to buy vista OEM now, if i cant reinstall it all the time
