Vista RC2 Released

As I was about to re-install xp anyway, I thought I would give this a try, can it be installed cleanly onto a blank HD or does it have to go over the top of XP like an upgrade.
If you can just install onto a clean HD, is the ISO bootable like the xp cd when burned?
Yup its bootable.

... all seems OK - shuts down without bluescreen and starts up OK.
So all working on Vista - leave well alone?
Mel p

BUT "security centre" insists that virus checker and defender not working - but they both are. Security centre was OK (showed them working) until a bluescreen crash. Then it lost them?

Any ideas??

RC2 appears to be available on Usenet and some torrents are kicking around.

Also I would imagine some nice people here would be kind enough to burn a DVD for people (at cost +p+p) (I would but Im fresh out of DVDs)

Im currently trying one torrent @ 100k but may try usenet as its quicker, just testing the water so to speak.

Cant see where to apply for the serial though on the main site, do you have to start the RC1 download first before it gives the option?

well i have 3 versions of vista on my drive, 2 x x86 and 1 x64 and none will install, this sux i so wanna try this.

Edit: Thought i would give it another go and noticed when i get to the disclaimer for install it tells me it's Release candidate 1 when i have the 7544 mounted that i got from Microsoft website.... is that normal?

edit 2: by reducing my fsb ratio i was able to reach completing instalation but then it would just hang and then when i reboot it uninstall's itself.

Yeah, I seem to remember mine said RC1 also, even though I've never had RC1. It says RC2 when fully installed though.

I couldn't get Punkbuster related games to work correctly (API problems) even with admin rights so I'm still using XP as my main OS. Anyone managed to get PB to work with Vista?

No the serial's were given out when the first public beta started and we've used the same serial's for the RC2 release, so if you've got the serial for the first one that should do the trick. But i'm sure if you look hard enough you can find the serial as it as the same serial released to all testers we havn't all got individual serials.

I think you'll find you have. I have two different serials, a friend of mine downloaded it and asked for two serials and they're also both different. One of mine has also now been activated too many times, apparently.

Well I had issues with COD2 but did a manual update and that seemed to fix it but BF2142 did work but now I get kicked after 30 seconds ......pffff

Cheers, a quick google and found a page with a link to MS, answered a few Q's then got given a serial. Wish they would put the link on the main page.

Need to have a Live account:

Cant find an original link so that one will have to do.

I put on a new installation of Vista RC2 a few days ago onto my brand new Dell Precision M65. I do have to say I'm highly impressed by the various additional options in Control Panel and task manager, a lot more diagnostic & reporting functions. The side bar while not anything that hasn't been done before is still excellent, as of course is the Winkey+Tab :D
At the minute my side bar shows a clock, weather, calendar, cpu/memory meter, batter meter, Remote Desktop Connection quick-launch, feed reader and BBC radio selecter/player. Tis nice.
Also worthy of note is that on this new laptop, a clean install of both RC1 and RC2 picked up all my hardware without a hitch, no need for me to go chasing drivers which I was impressed with.

But I do have to say that it absolutely EATS memory. With a couple of explorer windows open, a couple of web pages and maybe a small installation routine in the background for instance, it uses anywhere between 700Mb to my full 1Gb of RAM and the processor usage constantly jumps and never goes below 10-15%.
I also find the start menu very slow to show program sub-folders.
Scrolling long web pages in Firefox and IE is hopelessly slow and jumpy. The CPU also goes around the 40-70% usage mark when doing so. Unless this is down to drivers for my nVidia Quadro card; I downloaded drivers for it from the nVidia site which then say 'operating system not supported' during installation...
dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) sucks over 120Mb RAM in a lot of cases if I have even a handful of windows open  I know it's supposed to take a lot of RAM to save CPU usage but that just isn't on. Especially when the rest of Vista is already sucking all the RAM it can. Of course I could turn off the Aero theme but I'd rather pay for another 1Gb of RAM than be without the specia effects :D

It's probably indexing taking up the CPU cycles. It generally starts to settle down once it's worked out how your drive's laid out and your habits.

As for memory, reported use is always high on Vista, yet it does do a much better job of releasing memory when required, so while it says it's using a full gig, it's normally more than happy for you to grab some of it back when necessary.

I had RC1 running quite happily on a 512mb celery laptop a few weeks back while testing software compatibility.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get the Windows calendar to link up with the sidebar gadget, and also if you import or view data from the windows calendar with Outlook 2007?

I assumed it would link with the sidebar by default, but obviously not.

mm it does eat memory, previously i used to run win XP @ 120MB ram used (checked via TaskManager), now it uses a minimum 400MB to run. but its not the processes running, its the Services running in the background...
