Vista reverting to non-Aero on Java applications

Hi,

Every time Javascript is used (or at least when an application is opened that uses mostly Javascript) Vista reverts back to non-Aero.

After the application has been closed it does change itself back, so it's not too much of a problem, but it's quite annoying.

Is it my version of Javascript or is this just a problem with Vista x64 in general?

Thanks,
Craig.

I get this with Limewire on Vista x64 now, although Im sure I didnt on Vista x32. (I've just reformatted and put 64 on)

Do you mean Java or Javascript? Javascript shouldn't have any affect on Aero since it runs in a browser (mainly). I don't have any issues with Java either.

later versions of Java work fine with Aero but certain applications require older versions of Java which does screw up Aero. Can't run ConsoleOne or RConsoleJ on my works lappy without it disabling Aero. Tried copying the updated files over the old Java install which kinda worked but certain functionality ended up getting disabled which meant I had to go back to the older files.

Had a similar problem with the Buffalo Linktheatre software on my home Vista pc. If you install an updated version of Java, the program disables itself. Ended up using the media extender front-end instead which works ok but is a bit clunky in comparison.

Seems to be when a program, or a web page makes Sun Java start up (e.g. BT Digital Vault, Limewire, WebCT (WebCT is the web application college uses to submit work).

I've been using the eBay photo thing (which is a Java applet) without issues. Try uninstalling all the JVMs and installing the latest one again.

It all depends on what JVM version you have installed and what Java applications you are running.

Any application (whether Java or not) that makes specific calls to the GDI subsystem can cause Vista to enter compatibility mode by disabling Aero. Normally it is calls that involve Bit Blitting or direct access to the window surface/pixels for custom drawing. These particular methods were dodgy enough pre-Vista but now they are really are uber dodgy!

I clicked on that link and got a page with 2 buttons (course list and log in), and everything's still in Aero. On Vista x64.

Really love reading your replies mate - very informative :)

Hmm, seems that page reverts in Firefox (the WebCT thing) on the login screen, but only when you login on Internet Explorer.

I'll try reinstall Java.

I just left this as it was for a while (reverting to Vista basic style when I accessed my colleges website).

It started to really annoy me as I really don't like the Basic look.

Upgraded today and it works fine :p

That still doesn't fix the fact that WebCT is crap :o

Whoever made WebCT needs to look into AJAX.
