Vista Startup & Shutdown Issues

Hi guys,

I have 2 issues I need some assistance with.

Firstly

I've just upgraded to Vista HP 64bit, the OS is installed on to a RAID0 volume. It runs with no problems at all, however for some reason which I cannot figure out vista will only start when the install disc is in the dvd drive.

If I switch the pc on without putting the vista disc in the system hangs after POST stating "disk boot failure insert system disc and press enter to continue"

Secondly,

On shutdown/restart the system hangs on a black screen and won't actually power off or reboot.

I've installed all relevent chipset & raid drivers on the ASUS website and vista is fully updated. Full system specs in sig.

If anyone has any ideas as to solutions to either of these i'd be grateful, as quite simply, I'm stumped.

check in your bios to see if your hdd is selected as 1st bootup device.

that sounds like a driver problem... check your graphic card driver. what other things do you have connected to your computer?

Yep, HDD is set as first boot device.

Latest nVidia graphics drivers installed, no other hardware connected to the PC at the moment.

The shutdown issue seems a bit more than that tbh, windows does shutdown, but it won't physically power off the pc. And it won't actually re-boot when I select restart either.

could be raid driver issues, i had them with xp for a while my drivers took ages to shut down the hard drives. a year long wait for a driver update from abit fixed this for me!

as for vista did it find your raid array when installing?

did you have xp before vista ? if you did, did xp shutdown ok? ive had this problem once and it was a driver that stoped it from powering off..

Yes, xp was running on this system up until friday with no issues at all. It was only on a single SATA drive though. The RAID array is also new as of Friday.

if you can try vista on a single sata drive then if that works you'll know it's the RAID array problem....

I've just uninstalled the nVidia RAID and chipset drivers in case there was an issue there and the problem still remains. Any other ideas guys, now I'm really stumped.

Eddie182 and gareth170 - you both need to read the FAQ - particular the part about signatures.
You may use a signature (commonly used in email messages) in your posts. You can specify in your profile a signature to use at the bottom of your posts. When you post, there is an option to use your signature. A signature may contain one or more images but they must fit within a box with maximum dimensions of 400 x 75 pixels (width x height) and with a maximum (combined) file size of 20k. Images containing mostly very large words or animated .gifs will not be permitted. You may also add 1 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text directly above or underneath the image with no spaces inbetween image and text. If no images are used then up to 4 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text is permitted. Do not pad out your text lines with blanks lines. A line of text is defined as having a maximum length of 400 pixels. If you want to turn the signature off in the future, you can come back and edit your post. If you have specified a signature in your profile, the box will be automatically ticked for you.

is that ok now???
Not trying to be cocky, but no it's not.

The mods removed my above signature some time ago, because the signature contains more than four lines of text.

Pathetic, eh?

By the way, signatures can't exceed 20K in file size.

HEY. i wasn't being cocky... i just asked a simple question....

anyway on the rules it says if you use a image it must be 400x75 and can't exceed 20K... it doesn't say you only have a 4 lines of text limit in the image..

my image is 400x75 and under 20k

I meant, I wasn't trying to be cocky - I didn't mean to accuse you of being cocky.

I argued the toss with the mods about it, but four lines of text are four lines of text - just in an image.

I'm not a moderator, I don't make the rules - I (try to) keep to them .;)

sorry mate. i read your post wrong.... :o

Well, I've tried re-installing vista and the problem is still exactly the same as before.

However, I did notice that when selecting which drive to install vista on during setup that it was seeing the RAID array as Drive 1 and my lone sata drive as drive 0. Could that be causing the startup issue?

I've checked the bios and the raid array is set as the first drive and the lone sata drive as the second so I can't work out why vista is seeing them the other way around. If this could be the issue, does anyone know how to fix it?
