Vive worth it these days?

The bundle comes with a few games, to be exact the Touch controllers do. The games become available when you register the Touch controllers.

  • First Contact - Fantasic introduction.
  • Dream Deck - Another good introduction.

  • Robo Recall - Very good, perhaps the best VR shooter.
  • Lucky's Tale - 3D platforming in the 3rd person view.
  • Echo Arena - VR sports.
  • Dead And Buried - Target shooter.
  • Toybox - Not looked at yet.
  • Quill - 3D dawing / paint app.
  • Medium - 3D sculpting app.

People rave about Lone Echo and if you are into driving games, Dirt 3 / Project Cars 2. What type of games do you like? I'd checkout all the games in each bundle via YouTube as some may not be to your liking.

On Steam, I have purchased Arizona Sunshine, Dead Effect 2 VR, Elite Dangerous, Raw Data, Subnautica, The Talos Principle VR, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter VR and VTOL to name a few.

There are also some fantastic free mods for older non VR games. Doom 3 BFG, Alien Isolation (it's a must try), Half-Life, Quake II, etc.

OT, but you should download Oculus Tray Tool and optionally have that set your audio device and launch Oculus Home for you - https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/5okoju/oculus_tray_tool/ (My settings below, Super Sampling at 2 for the 1080Ti, default is 1) -

In Oculus home settings, Turn on Unknown Sources to allow launching SteamVR from Oculus -

Also for SteamVR, the Oculus Tray Tool will set the preferred audio device so we don't need to in Steam. Oculus uses their own version of Asynchronous Reprojection so we can turn that off as well -

Be sure to check out Steam's VR introduction also, The Lab. The archery mini game found within is very addictive.

Just some other thoughts/ramblings -

  • DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HEADSET WHERE SUNLIGHT CAN HIT IT. The lenses are magnifiying glasses, they will burn the displays. This damage is not covered by warranty
  • The headset requires a USB 3.0 and a HDMI port.
  • The sensors require a USB port each. I use USB 3.0 ports, but others are fine with 2.0 ports or a mix.
  • The Touch controllers use a AA battery each. They last ~4weeks plus, you may want to grab a set of rechargable batteries.
  • Look for ACTIVE USB extensions if you want to extend the sensor distance. Ugreen do a nice 2/3m HDMI and USB extension for the headset / sensors. The 5m USB 3.0 Super Speed active extensions on the bay also work.
  • The original Summer of Rift bundle came with an Xbox controller. The current bundle doesn't so you may want to order one at the same time. THIS IS NOT REQUIRED THOUGH.
  • Take care entering your name when creating an Oculus account as you can't change it later without going through support. You can if you use a Facebook account.

If I could give you gold on here I would, thank you mate. I'm in to all sorts of games really, I guess my main interest is FPS, I will be pre ordering Doom and Fallout 4 VR for sure. Good idea about checking YouTube for the different game bundles. Thank you for taking the time to reply and explain all that and thank you for showing me the settings you're using so I can just copy them as I have a 1080ti also :D

How is the audio/headphones that come with the Rift or am I better off using my own headphones? I've ordered one of the 5 meter cables you mentioned as one of the sensors will have to go behind me on the wall. I think I'm going to order another set of touch controllers and have the 3 sensors, I have a massive Laz-e boy chair so I think it will struggle when I move around as the back of it is so big.

I also wear glasses for long distance driving, would I still need to wear them for this even though the screens are close? I'm sure I read a long time ago you can actually get lenses made for your glasses prescription so I'll have to check that out if I need to wear them.

I do have a PS4 pro pad which I assume will work exactly the same as the xbox one pad?

Thanks mate.

Headphones are suprisingly good. You could use your own but they tend to fly off if you turn you head too fast. There should be a small tool in the box for removing the headphones. Looks like a small flat head screw driver without a handle. The edge of a coin also works.

You maybe better waiting for FO4/Doom. They should work as they are OpenVR(SteamVR) titles, but the controls may have issues. Bethesda have not said the will natively support Oculus Touch other than saying they want to add support for other VR systems. Doom is cheap but full price for FO4 without mod support and DLC is a sore point if you own the original.

We all had the same questions at some point :)

I think I am going to get a 3rd sensor but they seem rather pricey! I might do as suggested a few posts up and by the touch controller and just use the third sensor from that.

Mate, I think there may be a bit of confusion here. You don't get an extra sensor when buying a set of touch controllers, and you can't use a touch controller as sensor.

I don't see the package on the Oculus store now. I originaly got an extra set with sensor included for £99 from Oculus (didn't notice it here at the time) during the Summer of Rift sale. Just yesterday someone on reddit mentioned you can still get the package. Just double check what your ordering. As Petey says, you can't use a controller as a sensor. It's good to have a spare set though if they are cheap, and there is a beta to use them as trackers, VR objects, though this isn't something you should be interested in right now.

Oh, I didn't realise they had a package with a sensor thrown in. I guess getting that would be cool if you can find it. If not, just grab a sensor and try not to break your controllers :D

I wear small wire framed glasses (since someone told me that they make me look smart :p) which fit inside. Becareful not to scratch the Rift's lenses though. It's a bit of trial and error. You can also get perscription lenses made if need be with an adapter for fitting inside the Rift.

VR covers from VRCovers, washable extra soft padding for your face are a nice extra to have, while also adding a little distance from your face to the Rift for glasses.

Ok thank you everyone, makes sense about the sensor I will order one then for sure. That's a shame about the out the box support for Doom/Fallout especially as they were the two main games I was looking for although I'm sure at some point down the line it will be supported... I hope. Just annoying when multiple techs our out and you can't just have one to play everything. Thank you for all the replies everyone :D

Thanks too @Wrinkly I've ordered 3 wall mounts and now that thing to put over the top too lol oh an an extended cable lol :D
