VMware conflicts

Well, not the best weekend. Had to reinstall windows then get VMware up & running v1.03. First a damaged Ubuntu disc then the installation was slow & the clock kept losing time: 4hrs overnight.
Long story short problem not Ubuntu but VMware- now reinstalled & running ok apart from FahMon [see other post]

Q. Has anyone had this occur with VMware?
I have a trial version of BitDefender AVPlus v10 which now crashes regularly with VMware running. I have a Speedtouch router with firewall enabled but ports 21,23 & 443 remain open with or without BD or the windows firewall active as well.
Q. What firewalls are people using?

Latest Zone alarm won't work with VMware or vice versa can't get permissions enabled.

I get the painful slowdown / clock problems from time to time too.

Just uninstall/reinstall vmware solves the problem for me. You can keep the virtual machines so no lost production. :D

Are you all using the VMware players ? I'm assuming v1.3 / v1.4 or the new v2.0 ? Maybe I'm confused here.

I've not seen any problems with the workstation versions (specifically 5.5). We use them in very complicated setup's at work.

Additionally, I was under the impression that to run a 64-Bit O/S, you had to use the workstation versions, as VT is not supported in the players?

I did not know that! Thanks for that nugget.
Using 1.03 Server, latest, version, needed for the 64 bit operation of SMP. No use of the player for me

Ahhh.. that may explain it. My recommendation, spend the cash to get a full version of the Server or Workstation.
.

Actually its endemic to both the free and full server versions and workstation, just search for VMWare clock slowdown or Vmware time slowdown.

There are fixes out there. It mainly affects machines that have the host CPU being run to the ragged edge of the performance envelope in my experience.

If I remember correctly you can mitigate it by a) not using ALL the cpu, b) settings the actual clock rate of the CPU in one of the vmware config files, and setting the clients to synch their clocks with an external source every minute or so.
