VMWare VCP 4 - Tips

good luck I like the look of that content always been interested in vmware but never really pursued it

definitely one for the future

Unless Hyper V gets a massive improvement or somebody comes along with something that can challenge it then yes.

VMWare is a fantastic piece of software, we will be running 90% + of our systems on it by this time next year (around 250-300 VM's) and are also looking to move to virtual desktops for around 8000 users as well.

so do you all think the future is going to be VMware and only VMware?

Nope.

VMware (at the moment) always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else, but it's all to play for. The next big hypervisor could be any of the current players... or even a completely unknown one.

EDIT: We use exclusively ESX and have something in the region of 1000 guests and are sitting at something like 60% virtual. Plan is to be at 80-90%, so will likely stay that way until anything major happens in the market, but things like Xen and KVM are shaping up very nicely.

I've had a play around with ESX3.0 and ESX 4.0 but not really familiar with it all
what kind of tests and experiments could I try on it.

Well it looks like the market is opening up
originally windows and linux/open source

now windows, open source and VMware/hypervisors
I like the whole concept

Probably not...but VMware is so firmly entrenched in corporate land its going to take a lot to shift it.

I've worked on ESX environments hundreds of hosts in size, and am currently working on one that is at the center of the strategic business platform for a multi billion dollar financial services company. ESX is doing business critical, big time. Nothing else will be for a number of years.

Good luck with VMware View. It's far better than Microsoft Remote Virtual Desktops *shudders* but it still needs polish.

I'll take that as no-one has one yet...?

Im faffing with the only mocks, the 86 question unofficial one im averaging about 90%+ and the official 30 question VMWare one, 85%+ upto now.
Revision is a pain though, its such a lage & varied product. I see what the instructor said when he said it eclipses WinServer stuff for the amount of knowledge you have to have! :p

Took mine (upgrade from 3.5) and passed at the end of December (booked before VMWare decided to extend the deadline for taking the upgrade exam without having to go to through the course again). It is tougher than the 3.5 exam so (without wanting to spoil the surprise for you) I advise you to memorise the hardware requirements / licensing as well as the upgrade options (including rollback), security, LUN's and masking, SAN / iSCSI and FC options, switching, architecture, as well as the basics on VM creation, configuration and maintenance.

If you have any specific questions then feel free to shout.

Plus you might get a better response if you asked the mods to move this to the Servers and Enterprise Solutions section.

What in regards to licencing? The fact that its now done per socket, or the differences between the various editions?

The thing with that is that the questions ive seen thus far are very annoying.
I saw one the other day giving a situation and 4 answers, and technically, it could have been any 4 of them answers. But instead it listed just one of them as an answer. Very annoying, and inconsistant.

Its those sort of questions that'll get me i think. Because it asks for an opinion on a situation, technically one that doesnt have a finite answer, then tells you your wrong, even though experiance tells me im right! lol.

Its on my list of things to do this year. However, ive got a number of Cisco ones to get out the way first :(
