Mumble is definitely the best I've come across, I've used both Ventrilo and Teamspeak, neither of which were as good.
As mentioned the latency is excellent which is crucial for fast paced FPS like Quakeworld.

Been using Vent for a few years now - heard good things about Mumble though. If we hadn't just resubbed our server I think we'd make the switch.

I prefer ventrilo in that it just works, the interface is nice etc etc

but i think mumble is the best one in a technical aspect, if they could combine the two it'd be great

If anyone wants to try Mumble, I have a server which me and friends use.

mumble.gimpymoo.com
Port: 65413

Give it a shot with some friends.

I dont mind peeps jumping on so feel free.

Surprised mumble is bottom out of the 'top 3'

Have used all apart from TS3 and mumble is by far the best IMO

Was on vent 3 weeks ago trying out for a css clan, the delay was shocking

I think people are just voting for what they are using, not what they think is the best.

It sounds like the majority posting comments prefer Mumble. It really is technically fantastic.

mumble the vent bug annoys the hell out of me and happens far too often.

mumble also has much less delay.

Also directional voice in mumble works in BC2 and l4d2 without any mods or anything.

The "lag bug" I assume your talking about what I call "stacking audio", where it seems to queue a lot up?

Well, I have that on every fresh install I do since win 7 (I have my own vent server). I always fix it by either by giving vent adming, or actually, disabling UAC. It takes a reboot. But it works.

But, TS3 has come on leaps and bounds. I avoided TS2 like the plague, but a buddy of mine runs a TS3 server, and it works really well, I was shocked.

Though, thread high jack. This mumble. Does the server files come unlimited slots? Also, whats the server resource useage like on *nix? Id be quite tempted to replace my vent with mumble if its as good as people above are claiming.

Hell no. It just dawned on me what is is you have to do to fix it. My bad, had a few beers and went wrong.

Right, to fix the audio stacking is actually easy.

Go to set up, top left, tick the box in "use direct sound" and select your output. Save, fixed.

And fixed (note, mines set to speakers as that my output from my soundcard, youll know what yours is, or just leave it to "default directsound device")

Fixes mine and my vent buddies everytime.

I rarely use external voice coms in games (I'll speak in CS:S using the built in plugin and that's about it). Whenever I want to speak to someone I'll just use the voice feature in Steam.
Maybe I need more friends... :'(

Ive only used Vent as its by far the most popular, ive never even known anyone that uses TS or Mumble.

Id be happy to use anything though im not too fussy.

If im playing Source games i'll just use the in game as its easier.

Are TS3\Mumble servers more or less the same price as Ventrilo servers?

it's useful for bc2 and borderlands/alien swarm where the in game isn't good/limited.

Our BC2 clan runs a Mumble server, works great I find. Its very clear and no lag.

However a few friends sometimes run a TS2 server if we're having a few games of CS:S for old times sake :) It works just as well but the quality is IMO a lot lower. Never used TS3 or Vent so can't compare those.
