Rooney's is a brilliant strike in an important match but it's in a league below goals like Neymar's. I think there's a big difference between a great strike and a beautiful goal. I could go out and thump the ball a thousand times and chances are I'll hit a screamer eventually but I could never even dream of doing what Neymar did.

I don't see how a great strike is any luckier than a great run.
Because he had to do one thing once, hit the ball. Neymar had to do about 25 things perfectly, his lay off was a lot better too
Because it's one touch versus a load? Thus there's far more chance of it going wrong? Thus it's harder to just get lucky with?

This pretty much. It's a combination of perfect movement and multiple touches with constant skill and control against a single strike.
Tbf, I think you could attempt what Rooney done 10000 times without replicating it. It takes something special to completely miss hit the ball and for it to fly in as if nothing untoward happened.

Just because a shot is shinned doesn't mean it isn't a great goal, Van Persie crashed in some jumping chest-height midair volley from outside the box using his shin against Charlton a couple of years ago, I still had to throw those boxers away...
Agree that Gomez one is a strange inclusion, goal of the week maybe, definitely not goal of the season.

I wasn't suggesting that it wasn't a great strike to watch however the fact that he shinned it, made it an incredibly lucky strike.
