VPNs

What sort of security? They protect you from your ISP seeing what you are doing, and nothing else. It won't stop you from picking up malware from dodgy sites, and it won't stop state level actors or law enforcement finding out what you're up to.

Fair enough, just reading about NordVPN and the reduced price it’s on offer for and the promise of extra security etc including anti-malware protection and data breach scanner

For the most part that's marketing as they try and push the price up and add premium tiers to what is realistically speaking a thing people use to torrent through.

Dark web monitoring is something that has almost no cost that all these providers are throwing into their bundles, if you have a Google account it's free. Malware protection is built into Windows.

I'd recommend mullvad. Flat rate of £5 a month. They dknt use your email address, they provide you with a login and you can buy vouchers of amazon for added security.

NordVPN has threat protection pro so actually it will help stop malware.

Was lucky enough to pick up a Windscribe Pro lifetime subscription for $29 years ago - it gets used on most of our devices, either for accessing Netflix US/Japan (son's a big animé fan), to bypass the hospital's ridiculously invasive WiFi (same for when I stay at a big chain hotel) and to access our home PC/PS5 when we're away.

I've yet to find a device they don't have a native app for.

Totally different scenario but if you want to access a NAS or cameras remotely then you definitely need a VPN server (Wireguard or OpenVPN both free) either on a compatible router, a Raspberry Pi or the NAS itself (e.g. Tailscale).

Ditto, mullvad is my go to. If you are privacy concerned I consider mullvad the best overall solution.

What makes then better than say Private Internet Access for instance who I chose on them having been audited a number of times and tested in court.
I would say the main thing is total anonymity and privacy. You register an account number with no other details. You can pay in cash or crypto as well as other conventional routes.

Plus having been around since 2009 so are OGs

You can do that with PIA as well though, burner email address, gift card or crypto.

Not owned by a parent company who have highly dubious other interests in the very things they claim to prevent, or employing the idiot behind Mt.Gox's implosion as CTO when his biggest claim to fame is being too stupid to know he had been robbed, multiple times. Oh and mullvad actually own the hardware, PIA have a nasty habit of renting, that's a pretty major difference as it directly impacts which legal entity is subject to any law enforcement activities/requests, they also end up on black lists quickly as they publish server details. Don't get me wrong, there are worse companies than PIA selling VPN's, but there are a lot of reasons to consider better options depending on your usage/needs, but PIA via cashback is almost for nothing per year, that's probably about right in terms of value.
