VRAM - AMD/Nvidia, why does it differ?

Doesn't anyone just play ye olde video games these days?

People reading this thread would think PC gamers all periodically switch to afterburner, adjust their spectacles, exclaim 'oooh, that's an interesting figure!' in a nasaly voice and record it on an excel document.

Imo the latest games now dont need more than 3gb ram and 4k is very niche, if u can afford 3-4k on a monitor your gonna buy the fastest card as well and go sli to get the maximum framerate, so vram won't be an issue

670 user here with only 2gb of memory, not had any problems with any games so far to do with vram @ 1920x1200.

Granted more is always better value with regards to memory, but by the time i get any vram issues i will have upgraded anyway, and can you imagine the increase in cost of an nvidia card with 4gb or 6gb vram

There are lots of factors to take into consideration in making a good / cool / quiet / fast / power efficient graphics card, and the amount of vram size makes no difference to me presently.

i picked up the card I have now in sig, for £200 from OCUK with full warranty 2 months ago

I ran out of VRAM frequently on Skyrim with my 770 2Gb. The game would crawl and stutter very frequently. Pauses of 0.5 sec or so. It was the reasoning behind me getting my first 780.

It's probably similar in other games, but it's difficult to break 3 at 1080p. Might have more of a problem when I get my 1440p monitor.

Me too and I think SKYRIM has a well known bug @ over 3Gb IIRC, the game just crashes.

My take on NV's RAM rip-off has always been the same, whether it is required or not, cards costing £400-£500 should come with a minimum of 3GB, the 7950's at half that price all had 3GB.

I paid £184 for my card and it has as much RAM as cards costing more than double when I purchased it almost 2 years ago.

That's cannot be right.

Only because people want faster cards they move up, it has nothing to do with insufficient vram in most cases
And they are now in a better place of having 3GB of vram without ANY worry on the possibility of running out of vram at 1920 res, leaving the people (who's likely to keep their card for 2 or more years) they "advised" to paid the extra £80-£100 to get the GTX670/GTX680 instead of the 7950/7970 behind and stucked with 2GB of vram, with risk of shuttering issue due to running out of vram despite having only bought the card for less just a year or less ago...

Regardless of their reason for upgrading, it still doesn't change the fact they kept assuring others "the boat is not going to sink so soon" and yet they jumped onto "lift rafts" not long after saying that :D

Well the GTX 680 is 21 months old now and for the whole of its life and even now, I don't know a single game that 2GB isn't enough at full HD resolutions, so it seems that Nvidia were pretty spot on with putting 2GB on that card. They added a 4GB variant but with it still only being a 256bit bus, it showed how weak it was when going up against the 384bit bus at very high/triple screen resolutions.

Show me a game that 2GB isn't enough for 1080P? ;)

But of course, he's either lying, or Skyim is a piece of poo nobody wants to play and so we might as well dismiss it :D:rolleyes:

Or he has modified the game to run mods, at which point it is possible to run out of VRAM at 1080P on my Titan. You can't seriously use a game like Skyrim that has an incredible amount of mods available and being used as a fair reflection.

People have showed you many times, SKYRIM when heavily modded, you just refuse to accept it.

So I think people have stopped wasting their time, nothing will get you to criticize your beloved NV.

:)

Needed or not, 2GB of VRAM on a £400-£500 card is a ripoff, and nothing you or anyone else can will say will change my opinion on that. So i'd suggest agreeing to disagree.

He's right Greg, i can run setting in BF4 that fills my 2GB VRAM to the point where its not enough, a GTX 770 is a faster card than mine.

.....How can you use Skyrim, if that's the case then 3GB isn't enough, 4GB...etc etc. Just keep adding mods...

You've been going on about 2GB isn't enough for yonks, yet you're still rocking the 7850 2GB version, woulda thought you'd have got the 4GB version :D

I need a 3GB card now, and yet for £170 + 4 Free games including TombRaider. i have no reason to complain that it doesn't have enough VRAM at this point in its life.

This is the point, AMD never sold last generations 2GB cards as anything like top level, Nvidia are still doing it now with prices to match.

The point I was making got drag off into a different direction...

I was preferring to the point that people were advising others to go for the GTX670/GTX680 at average of £80-£100 higher in price, despite the GPU is arguably less powerful, with 1GB less vram, and small-bus size together with lower memory bandwidth comparing to the 7950/7970. If both sides were same price, then one could argue it doesn't matter going for the AMD with 3GB vram or Nvidia with 2GB vram...but the GTX670/GTX680 was priced at an average of £80-£100 higher in price during that time for nearly a whole year.
