vram.

Dont trust whatever nvidia says about how dlss x will reduce needs for higher amounts of vram. I remember back in the gtx970 days they said they had come outwith something new that reduced the need for more vram. It never made any difference ( i cant think of anything funny to say about the gtx 970 having 4gb of vram but only 3.5gb was usable, but I'm sure somebody else can ).

Planned obsolescence is the phrase I’d use.
Here’s some food for thought. Space marine 2 with texture pack. 21GB used. 23GB allocated.
This is why the 16GB of VRAM on the 5080 is unacceptable. It's not even out yet and it's already unable to play a AAA game in 4K with high res textures...for a grand! Absolutely DOA for that price. It may as well be called the "RTX oh go on then just give me the 5090".

So you say 32GB of VRAM on the 5090 is acceptance? It's not even out yet and it's already unable to play a AAA game in 4K with high res textures without DLSS4.

I dont needed 24GB or 32GB VRAM. VRAM do not mattered when I have vast 69.9GB GPU memory sharing.

I'd likely stick with my 3080 for another gen if it had a little more vram (12+). Remember those 3080 20gb rumours

Minimum id go for today is 16gb, 12 is just cutting it too close going forward in 2025.

VRAM is software dependent, if the Dev's put in the time, they can get the required amounts down, a lot. GTA V is one of the best examples of this.
I played GTA V on:
Xbox360: 512MB shared RAM (0.5GB)
XboxOne: 8GB shared RAM
PC: Better spec that the XBoxOne, cannot remember what I had.
On the 360, it looked a bit mushy but I played it all the way through as it was a very good game. XboxOne looked better (mainly better AF and textures) but the game play was no better. PC was just better textures mostly. The only game that VRAM (4GB) made a game unplayable for me is: Ghost Recon Breakpoint, had > 100 hour play and Ubisoft patched it and the usage went from 3.5GB to 7.5GB(even on the lowest settings). Could not play it after that.

That's ok, at least you can sell it and get a free 5070Ti with the money you saved over not getting a 3090 :D

12GB is definitely cutting it close for 2025. Only having 12GB meant I was struggling with the Indiana Jones game @1440P.
