Vsync and Games

I only turn it on if the game engine has terrible screen tearing issues.

If the game doesn't, then I leave it off. Things feel slow and obtuse with it on.

I've always wondered, what do people mean by "screen tearing"

For whatever reason graphics cards stil lrender things as if you had a crt.

which scans across the screen as a single point.

So when they get ahead they start sending half frames (the top half) on a crt that would be fine as it would go to the top draw it and be getting the bottom half when it got there but lcd refresh the whole screen at once so you get 2 or more mismatched parts's that are slightly out of line.

or at least that's my understanding

If you can't maintain a stable 60fpos though you'll actually end up getting closer to 30.

The source engine also lags noticeably with vsync on. Try twitch sniping in TF2 with vsync enabled - it doesn't feel snappy at all.

it's cause it's very simple and your gfx card can easily render it at 200+ fps :p

lol that's true. :p

Definitely, it's nigh-impossible to snipe well enough with vsync on. And I like head shotting people fast. :D

I've actually turned off V-sync in black ops now, and im using the D3D overrider and im actually noticing the slight improvement in responsiveness, it's quite nice actually.

Your desktop has VSYNC set to on by default (Win7) So are you seeing mouse lag there? Pick up a window and move it around the screen.

Make sure you turn off all the silly acceleration features on your mouse driver. Try and keep the mouse driver as vanila as possible. Remove any logitech software etc.

Make sure your screen refresh rate is set to 60hz (unless you are a dinosaur and still have a CRT or a lucky git and have a 120hz LCD)

Set Triple Buffering to on, and leave VSYNC on via the driver and then install and run DXOverrider and test using VSYNC on and Triple Buffering using DXOverrider, instead of the drivers. See if it improves.

If a game allows a refresh rate of 59hz, (COD as an example) set it to that, see if your mouse lag goes.

I find that with a little playing around, i get very little to no mouse lag, and get all the eye candy of no tearing.

Personally, I can't understand how anyone can put up with the tearing myself? It looks pretty nasty, and has such a detrimental effect on the game..

Horses for courses I suppose.
