VX Rearended - Maybe written off

Some people might have seen the wrecks to riches example of a lightning yellow that they did arguably more work on than Munchers. Cat D is nothing but an insurance company get-out clause to void a policy and walk away.
I think it will be worth mentioning in this thread that the car featured in that show is still UNSOLD.

Munchers car isn't typical of Cat D Elises/VXs though.
As I said, a lot of Elises end up as Cat D's for the smallest of knocks to the fibreglass. On a normal car it would be nothing more than a 2" crack on a bumper, yet due to the whole front end of an Elise being one big clamshell it's not quite as easy or cheap to repair, hence why the smallest of things can result in Cat D classification.

I know that, and I appreciate that, but to the rest of the market, it doesn't make any difference. Cat D is, to most people, Cat D. And they wont buy one. That makes the potential market that much smaller, which reduces value. Becuase even if you are ok with buying Cat D's - like some of us here would be - the person who buys it from you might not be so the saving needs to be worthwhile.

Was all ready to take the vx to the bodyshop the other day after spending 2 nights out in the rain until 11pm to get the wheels and suspension back on.

Turn up with borrowed tow car to collect borrowed trailer and the straps to tie it down weren't with the trailer, but locked away somewhere else, doh!

Hopefully it will be gone to the bodyshop this week...

more importantly, how long until you supercharge it :D

I went in a supercharged VX the other day...

Pros:
Is pretty quick - over 300bhp per tonne
Kit looks a nice install and is proven, reliable
Power delivery is absolutely instant and linear
Fuel economy is as good as if not better than before for normal driving

Cons:
As the power is so linear it doesn't "feel" fast, but it certainly is
It doesn't sound fantastic
It's overkill for the road in the sense that the speed piles on so quickly, only comes into its own on track, first and second gear are over with extremely quickly.
It's £5,500

It wasn't enough to make me want it really badly. The other option is more NA tuning, one member has just got 215bhp from his with not vastly significant engine work. No option at the moment seems the best to me, perhaps the money will be more useful to me in the near future. There is also the part of me thinks it's worth investing more in the driver, than in the car...

My old e36 m3 that my mate bought was written off because of a smashed front screen and the fron't seats and one rear interior panel being stolen due to BMWs costly prices for seats.

My mate bought it back and sold it for £4500 and this was a a mint car (bar the stolen bits and screen) that was worth 8k at the time. Had he fixed it he would have only got 5.5k or so.

As has been said unless I had receipts or a nice photo rebuild etc I would walk away, either way I would need a sizable discount, and with an elise or vx I would be very wary of a cat D as they are tracked cars.

If I repaired a cat D I would make a pack with all the photos of the work reciepts and then pay for an independant inspection and laser alignment on a jig etc, that would maximise the resale value.

Nah, accidents happen, he was apologetic. The roads were greasy following rain and he had his wife and two small children in the car with him, I'm not angry at him at all.

 Good man.

Shame about the car but knowones hurt & these things can be sorted. Best if it's written off in my opinion then you can start again a fresh.
Nice plate by the way :)

Due to the nature of the car, there's no need for that. The impact was nowhere near severe enough to touch the chassis and any chassis damage on an aluminum panel would be visible to the eye anyway. I do have photos of all the rebuild work and reciepts etc

You know that but would a buyer? For me a CAT D makes me worry about how straight the car is, if I was shown a report showing the alighment against the original specs I would be happy.

Along with the pics, reciepts it would prove to me that the seller was genuine and made every effort to get it fixed correctly. And I would be very pleased that the effort of an alignment check was done to allay my fears even though the damage didn't really warrant it.

Just a thought to cover you mate.

Respect on doing the work yourself, I will allways do as much as I can but lacking a garage limits things

That sounds very dubious, did you get proof that was why it was written off? A smashed front screen? Insurance companies replace thousands every single day.

Even if it needed an entire interior at circa £4000 it would have been below the writeoff threshold for a car of that value..
