hi,

i will be getting quite a lot of money soon and was thinking of upgrading pc

gfx card, cpu, mobo, the whole thing really :)

but then i thought, should i wait for dx10 compatable cards

current spec:
amd athlon 64 3000+
6800gt
1gb pc3200
a8v deluxe

is it worth waiting??
i can play most games maxed now are games going to need more power soon or anything?

thanks
nickels

No point in waiting imo when it comes to pc hardware.
Enjoy the now factor and upgrade.

There is never a good time to upgrade. :)

I would wait for Direct X11. Then when DX11 is out, wait for DX12. :p

I personally wouldn't wait months unless current hardware has limitations, however I did wait a short while during the X1800XT "current gen" timeline, spotted the X1900XT preview/testing and that showed a 25% performance improvement so I held off a bit longer, and waited for the X1900 prices to drop rather than pay for brand new released card. I also waited for the ATI 580 chipset rather than getting Nvidia or ATI 480 chipset with ATI videocard due to 480 problems and lack of Crossfire suport with Nvidia chipset. I was saving up the money at the time also.

However Nivida Nforce + Nvidia or ATI 580 + ATI X1900 seem the best out of the current chipsets/gen hardware, until the next major CPU socket and chipset comes along.

If your PC can play what you want it to play at good settings then why are you even considering upgrading? Of course new games will need a more powerful computer, but don't expect any sudden leap.

I would'nt wait, doesn't matter if DX10 cards come out tomorrow, thers nowt using it, and won't be for a long long time, only game i know of is the FarCry one, hardly worth rushing out and spending £500 on a card for DX10 thats only use is 1x single game for a couple of years, may as wel wait till its worth buying DX10 cards, but that will be a long way off, as the game won't exactly be flooding out, look at SM3.0 started with the 6 series, and its still not worth buying a card for, its gone quiet on that front imo, i think its been and gone. :)

I've lost count of the times I've almost given in to temptation and upgraded.

If you can run what you want to run mostly maxed out then just wait a while longer.

Time to upgrade is when you can't run things the way you want to and as soon as you do upgrade something faster will be released.

If you go and get a 24" widescreen TFT then you may need to upgrade for sure, but unless you do then save the cash and wait till you are unhappy with your PC's performance, trying to anticipate a need that isn't there yet is the sure way to spend more cash than needed.

This is true but buying and upgrading is all about timing IMO.And sometimes you can upgrade and boost performance for little cost.

Take the release of the 7900 Series gfx cards, the time to sell the previous gen had to be just right so you could sell your 7800 cards and still get something for them.

Making the cost to shift to 7900 cards not that expensive.

It cost me 40 quid to upgrade to a 7900 GT after selling my 7800 GT.I was happy with the performance of my 7800 GT but for such little outlay it would have been silly not to. :p

I now have a 7900 GTX but thats a different story :D

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dynamite set.......Waiting for ignition! :p

Seriously both the x1900XTX and the 7900GTX are on par with each other.

I'll leave it at that.

There are many threads that discuss this Here

Make your own informed judgment. :)

you only had your gt about 2 weeks, what happened there?

Played with it and decided that after the extra outlay for a VF 900 cooler. My 7800 GT had a VF700.That the extra 80 quid for the 7900 GTX was the more viable option. :p

Crazy I know but hey!!!!! :p

Im in the same boat, my finger has hovered over the buy button now loads of times. But I got Oblivion and it runs fine, plus it not my cuppa tea anyway, so I wont be playing it. As for other games coming out that might stretch the 6800GT, all I can think of is Quakewars, but chances are seeing as its Doom3 engine, it'll run suprisingly good on older 6xxx cards. But PCs games has really dried up, it makes me wonder what people are playing with their SLI 7800's, probably CCS or BF2 at 150fps... its not the games that are forcing people to upgrade at the moment, its large LCDs.

lol, it's a slippery slope, i nearly bought a x19000xt cos of the offer, convincing myself that after selling my 7800gt it was only another £100 to upgrade!! but then i realised i really don't need it cos i play @1280x1024 so i got the x1800 256 (cos i couldn't get hold of a 7900gt)

Well I know this is an older post now, But it is the same thing i've been wondering. Whether to wait for DX10 cards.

Personally I am.

I have a 6800LE Graphics card, Fully unlocked now :)

Going to a 7900 GTX 512 has been very tempting for me. But whats the point in spending £500 now, When the card i have allows me to run things maxed out. Like you. So if you were to upgrade, do it at a worthwhile milestone.

DX10 i would say is that milestone!

Yup x1900/7900 GTX are on par, but the x1900's use more power, and produce more heat, so if thats a problem then go for the GTX, if not then go for the x1900 as its cheaper, but they are on par as said. :)

Pointless upgrading to DX10 yet tho, £500 is only going to get you 1x game, the new Crysis one, and by the time the DX10 games start appearing, were going to have been through a fair few generations of cards, i can't see them flooding out, as the new Crysis one is the only one i know off, id wait until there is a fair few DX10 games out, and its worth buying a DX10 card, as by that time G80/R600 are going to be old hat, the cards we have now are going to run everything for a while yet. :)

Im sure there was a mention of about June/July for the G80, if so, i can't see the point in that as theres going to be nothing it can be used for DX10 wise, probably cost about £500, and will only be running the same exact stuff as the x1900's/x1800's, 7800/7900's, which are far cheaper.

If you get a DX10 card now, then when the DX10 stuff start appearing, your DX10 card you have now will probably not run em as well, so you'll be upgrading again probably to a faster one that is going to be able to handle the DX10 stuff properly as it came out around the same time. :)

Id just go for a x1900/7900, pointless going £300/£500, £500, then another £500 when the DX10 stuff is about, you may as well just go £300/£500, then the other £500 when the DX10 stuff is around, save yourself the price of the inbetween card.
