Then buy a 1st generation Playstation 1:

During all this audio fun, my pal Pete Riggle stopped by with an audio underground digital favorite, the Sony PlayStation 1 (Model No. SCPH-1001). I had heard rumors of just how good this particular version of the PS1 is when used as a CD player and was curious to give it a listen. This kid's video game player really does have outstanding audio performance. I'm guessing you'd have to spend more than $6000 on a one-box CD player to equal let alone better it

charming. Seeing as i joined OCUK 5 years before you, it seems you may have been premature, and of the 3 colleagues moderately interested in hifi whom i sent this to when i saw it, it was new to them. But hey, not all of us are so friendly and enlightened as you :)

I heard rumours about how good a cd player playstation 1 is sposed to be when i had a new one back in the day.I had the original playstation with rca out so compared it to my marantz 52 through the old pioneer a400 and the marantz was much better. The marantz cost about £300 i think.

Not really interested as it costs a bit too much. My marantz cd63 cost me £12 delivered and a 20p voltage regulator to fix it. Just couldn't stretch my budget any more :D

Yeah, this has been known since just after the PS1 actually came out. Still, a lot of people may not know about it ^^

The resale price of those old ones went quite high at one point, although it sounds like they've come down again.

It also shows you what a complete rip audio gear is. Costs nothing to make :p

The transport may be good but there's no way the DAC can match anything worth over a few hundred quid let alone $6k

Sounds about right. It needs a quality DAC with it to make it good for audio. DVD players are supposed to make good CD transports generally too.

Yes - if it had digital out it might be a good shout, but through those outputs, forget it. There will be a lot of noise etc. too due to so much going on in a small space. External power brick would help, though (iirc it has one)

Even tho it's a nasty DAC on paper, it does seem people who own the PS1 as a CD player really like the sound of it. Maybe the DAC even colours the sound in a certain way?

Could be, I'll have to dig mine out, it's one of the reallyold ones with RCA connections on the back...

You know you want to mod it :D

I think oil_collett has rubbed off on me a little as well as my job. Now I want evidence and full comparison tests between everything :(

Then I'm going to rob you. How on earth did you get that.

I spent about £250 on my 63, and that includes the 2 players I killed when I started out :D

I found it in my girlfriends wardrope/cupboards along with a Audiolab 8000s, 2x 8000a, a standard CD63, Mission Freedom box shelf speakers (think 752 can't remember), Epos ES11 speakers, full Pioneer seprates system with the pro cd player, a very rare make of cd player that I can't remember the brand logo looked like a ohm sign and my prise find a Linn LP12 turntable with a lot of mods. As you can imagine I was like a kid in a candy shop with that lot I just couldn't believe it when she kept on bringing more bits out ! To cut a long story short her uncle was a hifi repair man and her dad bought the lot off the family as a favour when he passed away for £200 not knowing what it was worth.

I sold the kit on for them but got the 8000s/CD 63 Ki Sig/Mission speakers/Es11s/LP12 for free for doing so, I use the system in my pc room and it sounds pretty good. I have a Marantz 6000 KI sig modded for my main system but I have owned that from new.
