my younger brother wants to learn how to model for a future in video games, and as a older brother i guess its my job to help  .

So any ideas on for him as to where to start, any useful programs that will help him learn. Price aint really a issue.

There is a 3D package that is free to use (I think), but the name escapes me at the moment.
It will be a good way to start but he will eventually need to learn either 3D Studio Max or Maya. 3DS Max is probably the most widely used in the industry but the price maybe an issue. :p

How old is he? Is he interested in Animating the models too?

EDIT: Blender is what i was thinking of. Free to use apparently and has a decent set of tools.

cheers for the reply, i'll look up blender.

As for for your questions, his 14 and yes he does want to animate the models as well :)

£2,225 for 3ds max  jeebus save my bank account, but if he really gets in to 3d modelling....guess i have to cough up for it :(

lol :D

yep, 3d max then once he gains the basic skills and can create low poly game models he should try and join a mod team. Mod teams take existing game engines and make their own games from them so he can model in game props exactly as he would in a work environment. This is one of the best ways to get in to it, plus it's fun! :)

cheers mate for the info :) .

I've got aother questions, theres many tutorials poping up on google. Is there a website that could be recomended, also someone told me theres a free version of maya would that be a good program to learn from?

Maya Personal Learning Edition

Maya is best used for Movies / TV. My partner was told at university to not bother with it if she really wanted to break into the games industry. Games industry looks mainly for Max experience, but i can't see why Maya wouldn't give him the basics in Modeling / Animation.
No personal experience of it so can't really comment on it in terms of how easy it is to learn.

I know University is a few years off, but is he planning on going? Animation or games related degrees are becoming essential for the industry now.

yeah he is going to to university but he hasnt decided yet on how to get there or what course his planning to take, he is on his pc atm looking what will be the best path for him (as i have absolutely no idea in this area :D ).

So do you think blender + a bit of maya till he gets his bearings then on to 3ds max or would you recommend another program inbetween?

thank you very much for the help so far :)

Autodesk used to give out a free version of 3DS Max, tweaked to remove some key features. He could take a look at it. It's called GMax, and is available here:

Matt

Is it any good? Its not supported anymore unfortunately, or at least not by Autodesk (or the developer looking at the gmax forums).

As the download is only 19Mb it must be cut down a lot (no character studio i expect) but still might be worth a try to start with.
