Hi all

as some of you may know ive had issues with managers in my work, Ive got to the point again now where i dont want to be here and im considering handing in my notice tomorrow, However, i dont have a job to go to and me and the missus have a 15 month old son so need income really....

what shall i do :(

Pop into some of the local retailers, etc. see if they have vacancies (if you can afford to live on the wage) if there is anything going atleast will give you some income temporarily until you sort out something more permanent.

Did you manage to resolve your previous hours issue?

Typically, it is definitely easier to find a new role whist in current employment.

There is nothing wrong with finding yourself in this position where it is time to move jobs though. It is fairly common.

Work and business is a highly dynamic environment where the; people, managers, relationships, working culture and atmosphere, work-life-balance and roles can all change and evolve over time.

This change can be very sudden and dramatic, where for example new managers start or company policies or targets change.

Sometimes you just no longer feel like you fit.

You may have been feeling like this for a long time, it's built up progressively or it has recently just become apparent. It is important to take a step back initially at this stage given where quitting would leave you without another role to go to.

For yourself only (don't share it) quickly write down all your concerns, why you want to leave and what you are looking for from a new role. Also write down any aspects of your personal life and relationships that may also be contributing to this and notably that would carry forward into a new job (some may be positive like spending more time with you family others not so).

As part of this, have a think about how easily you could find a new job in your area.

Finally very briefly set out your finances to cover (important to be realistic on this one); 1) how long you can afford to leave and earn no money for, 2) what's the minimum salary you require going forward and 3) what effect leaving voluntarily would have on your eligibility to claim social benefits.

If you can afford to leave financially and remain unemployed for a while knowing you will be much happier, then you wouldn't be the first to do it. It can be a very healthy decision and make you highly focused when it comes to finding a new job.

If however it could cause significant hardship then it's probably worth finding something else to move into first, if only as a bridge initially before moving again.

I am presuming based on your previous thread, you don't feel a resolution can be sought at your current employer, hence haven't suggested it.

Ultimately, it sounds like you are ready to move to a new job/company, however unless you can afford to leave yours with nothing else lined up I would consider staying but start actively job hunting. You should find many of the local recruitment agencies will have temp work if that helps. You may be surprised at how quick a new opportunity comes up when you focus your energies on finding it.

This section of the forum offers some fantastic advice but what do you want people to tell you in this situation? You have a child, you need an income and you have a responsibility to provide for your family. Surely your only choices are 1) Ride it out or 2) Find another job

Thanks for all the advice guys... I've been on a few job search websites today.. I am so unsure on what I want to do as a new job... problem is I'm not to sure how work places go about GCSE grades etc as mine was 11 years ago so dont seem relevant to me.... i was thinking about going to college and doing something along the lines of IT and computer building but not to sure how the funds system works...

Do they want the fees in one lump some? The next open day isn't until August I think so a while off....

As most of you have said I should really stick this job out and apply for others... Hopefully something pops up soon though....

@Scrutinize can always count on you for a breakdown of things and how to help... much appreciated mate

Places won't give a monkeys about your GCSEs - you have work experience and skills that's what they're focusing on. Not the fact that you got a D in Textiles back in 1642. I've never once been asked about GCSEs and nobody I know has and I worked in a school.

This GCSE's are just a very vague indication that you can apply yourself and you have a certain level of intelligence. By far more important is your experience in work, your aptitude and attitude.

Isn't it obvious?

Find another job THEN leave.

Yeah when we interview people just run down the grades no matter if it was 1642 or 2017 - if someone has a bunch of As regardless it looks better than if they have a bunch of Fs but that is about as far as it goes. TBH unless there is something that obviously discounts them from the job like lacking very critical experience mostly the decision is made on the presentation of the candidate :s

The only reason I say about the grades is because when looking at job description on most sites they say you must have grade C or above in 3 key subjects etc... I did think to myself its a bit silly wanting to know that from years and years ago... I've worked since leaving school always been employed so that's in my favour I suppose.. I am looking have been on it all this evening searching for a new job :)

its just so much hassle nowadays to get a job, I really want to learn more about internals on computers and the building process but not sure what the course is called at colleges
I don't think there is one like that mate.

When I did college it was a gnvq in ICT

Isn't that pretty unlikely to get you a job at the end? (one with a decent income for wife+kid?)

I imagine generally your most recent qualifications matter ie gcses don't matter if you have a PhD. Less importance will be put on them with increased time since completion I imagine.

Sounds like you need to look at jobs short term, and what the market is like for a job after proposed college courses.
